The Summer vs Summer’s record vs Leon vs Leon’s record, she had to swim waaaaaay easier than Leon did (4:02.50 vs something like 4:08), Summer was 4:37 vs 4:24.
I am actually gonna set an optional 10 min all hands meeting at my small company for a viewing party at work. It’s Canada’s first shot for a gold medal !!! I think that is worth a 10 min break and I can intro my staff to what this crazy event is because most of them have no idea and if she medals they will all be talking about the 17 year old.
It won’t go well with you swimming fans, but for me as an observes there’re way too many swimming disciplines in Olympics.
There’re only 6 medals in football (soccer), while swimming gives away 111 medals. The whole athletics has 146 medals, and those include jumps, throws, decathlon or even a race walk. Not a run backwards nor 5-jump.
Seeing the medal history, it looks like a medal pump for USA.
I suppose a grouchy answer would be that soccer actually gets 120 medals (20 players per team). This is one of those endless arguments. My kids are both competitive swimmers and they think there are too few swimming events in the Olympics. Bring on 50s in breast and fly, the backstroke relay, etc. Personally, I don’t bother with the events that are not the pinnacle of the given sport. So I don’t care about tennis, men’s basketball, men’s soccer, and baseball, but everyone has their own preferences.
I think Summer’s race today is the biggest lock in the games(along with Marchands 400IM), including Ledecky’s 1500. Really sucks the pool is so slow, because time is what we will be watching in that event, 2nd and the rest will be miles behind
So from any Aussie friends out there, how tough is it to have Sam Short shut out of his events? Is there something behind the scenes anyone can share, waverider?? We here in the US have had our huge disappointments too, mens 100 back, 200 free left two potential medal contenders outside looking like poor Sam.

so around 2.5 seconds off her world record, which is in line with Titmus’ performance relative to her world record winning the 400 free?
So far Marchand was closest to his world record (less than half a second off over 400m).
What’s the estimate on how slow this pool is per 100m, or is it stroke dependent (fly and breast maybe slower than long axis strokes)?
Serious question, does FINA have a regulation on how long a person’s fingernails can be, and do they have to be natural, ie no fake nails? Just noticing Titmus’ nails are pretty long and had the thought that what is stopping someone from putting on some 6†carbon fiber nails and basically creating a paddle.

Tell Summer to grow out her nails. Next meet Dressel will come with the carbon nails. Having said, that guaranteed that the thought in your head and Titmus’ is the same!!!

Might make more of a difference on the touch of the wall when it goes down to milliseconds. Like Lisa Norden said in the T100 interview with Jan & Jack last week… that if she had bigger boobs she would have won gold in London…the difference between her and Spirig was so minute…
Ya I was really rooting for Peaty to win his 3rd, but since he didnt, cool he tied with Finke for the silver…
And this had to be the slowest race thus far, I figure the entire field was around 1.5 seconds slow. Womens breastroke was slow too, so figure this is the worst stroke in this pool. 200 free’s were also really slow for the men, not as bad for the ladies. Seems to me that it is between .5 to 1.5 per 100 slow depending on stroke and distance swam. Really too bad as this is the difference in a lot of world records falling, which from pre season swims should be falling now…
So how about the womens 100 back final, only 4 countries represented with 2 swimmers each. Not sure if that has ever happened, I certainly dont remember it if it has. Glad Murphy snuck in for a bronze, dude had a clear lead with 10 meters to go and just ran out of gas. Stocked for Hobson too, also in the lead until the very end. But glad Popovich got his hand on the wall, been a tough go for him since he broke the WR in the 100. Dam finish of the 200 looks like the 50 finish now!!
Both upcoming medley relays are going to be super interesting with lots of teams in contention. Even the home team France I see had a backstroker in the final, wonder if Leon will be the breast leg? They have a flier that could actually win the individual, and there are always sprinters from France. The US has Murphy who was 3rd, Fink who was 2nd in Brest, Dressel likely for fly, but who for free?? Fastest split on the other relay was our backstroker who chocked and didnt even make his final, same for Guliano, missed his final in the 200. Safe pick is Alexy, but safe might not win it in the end…
And how about Chalmers, dude is quietly crushing it, fastest split on relay other than the leadoff for China. And GB has a solid team too, and dam China could take it all in the mens…Ladies boils down to US and Oz, but dam there have been a lot of Canadians in those finals too. Can Summer swim a fast 100 fly?? I mean she goes out in 58+ in the 400 IM, how bad could a stand alone be??

that showed up in Summer’s 400IM too - ahead of WR pace until breaststroke, then fell off by a couple of seconds…
So looking at the mens 4x200 prelims, I think Guliano may not be on the final A team? I think they had him swim this prelim because he did so bad in the individual 200, and a 1;46.7 roll is really terrible too, a 1;47+ on a flat start. Coaches will be in a quandary for sure…
So I have heard no mention of this, but is Marchand on the relay tonight? I mean the French team did great in prelims, show medal potential. If you throw Leon on there and it is for sure a threat. He does have to do a 200 fly and 200 breast, but those are semi finals that he can get away with a bit of soft swimming, and then blast an all out 200 free on the anchor leg to get the most rest…Anyone know this situation, be a shame to leave off the guy who had the fastest split ever on a 4x200 relay at NCAA’s…
Lot of Chinese swimmers underperforming, not sure what to make of that. Apparently they have had 100’s of drug tests in the past couple months…But also several US swimmers along with other countries under swimming too, perhaps a function of the double taper and how long in-between…

i expected the chinese to underperform because of the spotlight on them this year. but did you see that a couple of chinese swimmers, including one woman who’s supposed to be on the 4 x 200 free relay upcoming (they are the reigning olympic champions), got popped again? this time for dianabol, which is a full blown anabolic steroid. and, of course, they were let off. again. for the guy, this was the second time he was popped (also 1 of the 23 in the more famous case of a couple of years ago). they each ate a bad burger, getting their steroids that way. which is how i get my steroids and you all probably too. (avoid carls jr., they use untainted beef.)
