Help me choose the best disc wheel

I just got the Elite Drive disc as well, did you adjust the RD to help it fit? And yes the hub is loud.

im looking at a super 9 (second hand) , he says its not hookless but everything else is the same as the new one

thinkness etc

is that true

and can u use a shimano 12 speed cassette on 11 speed hub??

thanks

Yes, spacing is the same

So is the hed vanquish a solid wheel or a spoked rim with a carbon cover

It’s a V62 spoked wheel with a carbon cover bonded onto the rim.

I’m saving up my money for an Aerocoach Aeox disc wheel myself - their testing on wheel/tire combos is unmatched, so I know for sure that a 26 mm Corsa Pro Speed tire will be fastest, no guess work required. Also love that the fastest cyclists in the world use their wheels in time trials when stakes are the highest, even when they’re not sponsored by them. Already have the Titan front wheel which has been fantastic.

Ok thanks

Bloody expensive for a rim with just a cover

Best I take that off the list , such a shame I was about to purchase today , but I couldn’t get a straight answer out of he’d

Anyone know any about the sl version of this disc ?

Finally got the Caden out today ahead of first race next weekend. Probably not too much to say in terms of review other than I’m very happy with my choice. Very very light, confusingly so compared to the Bonty 75mm and a roval clx2.

Even with my porky 83kg (refer to another thread for context:roll_eyes::grin:) then I didn’t notice any flex. And running with a latex tube today at 80psi on 28mm tyre on rough chopseal felt fine.

And the big thing. It makes the right whompy-whomp noise. When riding along it’s pretty quiet but if there’s a solid barrier beside then you can hear it.

So ticks all the boxes for me. Wide. Hooked. Can be tubeless. Rated to 110psi (tubed). Light.

If I had to complain about something, the graphics aren’t exactly what is choose. They are single in some light angles which is good, but the stars are erring on the blingy. But that is really splitting hairs.

cool

is it a spoked wheel with a cover ?

a hollow wheel inside with a solid cabon outer?

or is it a solid inside (honeycomb) with a cabon outer like a zipp ?

also did u have tio adjust the brake rotor on fitmint ? so it doesnt rub

It’s hollow with solid carbon outer. Flat on the NDS, and with shaping on the drive side to retain strength and give clearance for the mech.

I got one of their ultralight brake rotors. When the box arrived I almost didn’t accept delivery as it had a puncture through the cardboard, and whilst the wheel was fine, I suspect the disc brake rotor that was taped to the outside of the box took a bit of a bash. When I first installed on the wheel and the wheel in my frame there was a slight rub at one point. But 20seconds with the rotor tool and it was sorted and now spins freely. So now I can just swap wheels and all the shifting and brakes are perfectly aligned/consistent. And just thinking about it, and highlighted I didn’t even think about it, then braking was just as good as shimano Ultegra rotors.

Looks dope! Which tire? Could you take a profile shot? How was the ride feel in general? How’s the free hub sound?

We have crazy wind here in Germany what with all of the farm fields and I’m curious how it would handle strong gusts. I’m close to pulling the trigger but the wheel is €1500 euros. I’m hoping they run a black Friday sale ..

This picture was up above posted on 24/9 with some others from when I first got it with a Corsa Pro Speed (28mm)

I’ll be putting a GP5000S TR on later this week I think for the race as it’s going to be raining and the Corsa may be too fragile. The photo from the weekend was a specialized turbo which I doubt you’d be wanting to use/see.

Woops I missed it somehow. Thanks Duncan.

Could we say that Zipp wheels are bloody expensive for a hunk of foam?

Or Caden disc is bloody expensive for a hollow wheel and two covers?

If we are talking QC, durability, etc., I’d take the HED disc any day. As far as aerodynamics, they are all essentially the same with proper tire.

Which would be a fine point for agreement, were it not for the (much discussed) max 70psi pressure limit they state. Which, to me, is not independent from durability. If they are so strong/durable why are they the outlier in the pressure, at a point below that that would work for me as a 6’4” 83kg being.

Also, the Cadex was cheaper than the HED, if I could even have got them (they were out of stock).

This is my issue with HED. If you ask them, they seem to have some script they say that doesn’t make sense.

”The air volume is much higher so you don’t need as much pressure….”

Any follow up questions are met with the script being repeated. Even if I say “How can me at 90kg have the same optimal pressure as someone who weights 75kg?”

What does Zipp say about it?

Zipp are hookless so N/A.

ETA: To be clear, in the spirit of this thread, then there is likely no ‘best wheel’ for everyone. Different people will value different things higher. And thats good for many many reasons. And so I have no qualms with HED being absolutely top of some (many?) people’s lists. They were high on mine for all bar one ‘requirement’.

I can’t understand the max pressures they list, but they do that, and that’s their choice/call. Plenty have checked with them to see if it’s an error and found that it isn’t - they intentionally have an upper limit and form that some of us have taken the view that should a failure occur by us running pressure above that then it would be unfair/unlikely we’d blame HED, and so that’s not a risk we want to take with $$k wheels.

Why would Zipp comment on HEDS wheel pressure max?
