Hi, I’m in the market for a disc wheel to race triathlons (70.3 / long course). Here’s what I’m currently comparing — would love your input on aero performance, handling, weight, and value:
Hi jdion,
Do you have any tire width consideration (i.e. what tire do you want to run ), price consideration, and where do you live to ship them ?
If you have no requirement with width, add Citec to you list - german, very well built, light, “cheap” in comparison.
However, if as some of us you want to put at least 28/30mm tires on it, the list is basically :
Parcours (UK, 1600€, 1100g, 30.5mm width)
Reserve (22/30, not 25/38 as you said, 1200g, 3500€ with front wheel)
Black INK (2900€…1200g, 31mm…)
Scope ( 3000€…LMAO…900g, 31mm)
Then Chinese wheels, with betters prices, yet no cheap and potentially terrible service and sometimes failures (from what I read, no first hand experience) (granted, rear wheel failure is less dangerous than front).
No budget constraints, and no issue with tire width — though I prefer running at least 28mm tires. A minimalist design is important to me aesthetically.
From what I’ve read, Scribe uses Japanese carbon layups and seems to strike a good balance between quality and price. It’s currently my top pick.
Yeah, but its still a chinese-drop-shipped-in-europe-with-a-nice-logo-stuck-on-it wheel for 1400€. No thanks… Also, rec. 28mm tire, I’d rather use a 30mm personnally.
Solid wheel, but it feels a bit outdated, especially with the narrower internal width. Based on the data I’ve seen, the Scribe disc appears to perform better overall.
Yeah, possible yet I’ve been able to find many more opinion about hem in the UK TT scene, and they are optimised for 30 mm - which I prefer to the 28mm for the scribe. I prefer the look of the scrybe.
Both are optimized for 28mm tires but personally, I’m not a fan of the Parcours branding or aesthetics. Scribe also seems to use higher-grade carbon fiber, which could translate to better stiffness and durability. Like others have said, you probably can’t go wrong either way — but there may be some marginal gains. Let me know when you received your wheel.
I know that Lidl-Trek tested pretty much every disc wheel out in the market during the off season and chose to go with the Scope Artech due to that their testing showed that it was the fastest with the Speed Concept. Since they don’t have a sponsor that supplies disc wheels they are free to choose any disc wheels they feel would work the best for them.
My guess that it is probably is faster than the other wheels on the list but I highly doubt it is worth the $1000-1500 increase in price over the other wheels on the list.
Here is an update from Ben from Caden asking about TT Discs:
The top TT discs are all within 0.2 - 0.6 watts but older narrower ones when used with a 28mm tyre or a 30mm tyre can be 2 - 3 watts slower.
This is all independant pro team data from Silverstone so it’s not mine to use.
In other words I’m the same as discs that are two or three times the cost.
I too would like to have a rear disc on my new P-Series Cervelo but I do have budget constraints. My P-Series came with the Reserve 63 rear wheel and I was wondering what the thoughts are on purchasing an EZ Disc wheel cover for it?
