Help me choose the best disc wheel

Please check in when you receive these. I’ve been following this company for some time now and you’ll be the first other than some online “influencer” to talk about this company. I read about some hub issues that were being reported but wasn’t anything functionally, just superficial but think they are using a new surface coating on them now.
The issues I have with a company like this is dealing with a warranty issue, being in the US with no distributors, if a warranty issue should arise would I be shit out of luck with a wheel(s) until resolved which could be months. I like the lifetime warranties that cover crash protection as wheel.

This was a major factor in my decision.

The long lead times didn’t make me any less nervous about shelling out that amount with a less well known (to me) company. Will report back.

Don’t worry, even if you live in Europe, you will hope not having a warranty issue.
Weightweenies feedbacks on this brand are a no go for me. I will not buy one of the most expensive wheel on the market if customer service is that bad.

Don’t forget the 20mm of the citec disc is measured between the hooks. The inner width of the wheel, where the bead of the tire sits, is > 20mm.

The inner width or internal width of a rim or wheel is the inner distance between the hooks. It’s the main driver of how wide the tyre will end up being (other than the tyre itself, of course).

So…. Have we made a choice yet?

I have seen a 28 on the new KU but I wouldn’t recommend it.

did this work for you?

The airshot did not work for me, wouldn’t even push the tire outward toward the bead.
I ended up doing two things that finally worked-

  1. Bought a 6L air compressor for about $200, and one of the trigger/dial bike inflators to fit onto the air hose. This managed to seat the tires, but they would still pop out of the hook when the air was let off.
  2. Two extra wraps of tape. That finally did the trick. Not only stayed in hooks after deflating, but also managed to hold a lot of their pressure overnight when inflated with no sealant. Added some sealant, and they now hold air without losing pressure.

Also, as has been my experience in the past with HED wheels…….Contis are a B*TCH to mount on HED wheels! No way I could have gotten them on without my kool stop tire jack.

Here are the main things I have learned with all this tire pressure testing..

WE TESTED..

#1 Is that some tires and wheels are just not suppose to be in love..

#2 Everyone that does tubeless should own a compressor. It just needs to be put into the budget.

FWIW…I set up 2 sets of HED wheels tubeless for a couple friends headed to IM California a couple weeks ago, 1 set including a rear disc…all with Pirelli P Zero’s. Easiest rubber I’ve ever seated for tubeless. They seemed to marry well. I’m not an expert on rolling resistance, or whether the tire is super puncture resistant, or if @E_DUB can blow it off the rim…but I’ll just say they were easy and seemed pretty nice, and when my Conti’s are ready to be replaced, I’ll most likely give them a try. I’ve damn near broken a thumb and dislocated a shoulder trying to get Conti’s on/off certain wheels.

Just some feedback on one brand - HED. I’ve had issues getting my HED disc balanced. I noticed after putting 28mm tires on it I was getting a small amount of run on the frame. The wheel was wobbling a bit. HED asked me to send it back and said that’s not a warranty issue and they are charging me 270 bucks to remove the cover and true to spokes and put a new cover back on.

They said there’s no way the wheel left the factory like this. Possible, it did, but if they say it’s not, then it happened with very little use as I’ve used the wheel about ten times, only in races. My other three HED wheels don’t wobble like this, so presumably it’s something that’s more likely to happen to their disc wheels and it’s a costly fix.

What do you mean on the new Ku, there is a new model coming out? I haven’t heard that but you may be right.

Jeroen

They have produced 2 models. I’m just taking about the 2nd version. I’ll have @Yutaka_Sonik come Over this weekend and we can put some different tires in the rear and post some photos.

Okay, you know something I don’t. I never saw there was a second model and where there are changes to the first one. I’m seriously interested what the differences are. I will see a customer with a brand new Ku but not happy with her fit in a few weeks, I saw the pictures of the bike, looks very similar to what I used 5 years ago.

Not the cheapest choice, but I went with Princeton CarbonWorks and have not been disappointed. They are beautifully made and work great with the Conti 5000 TT. I can’t wait to ride full blast with them this weekend.
PS - I will take the lights off to race :-)!

Great looking bike David! I’m in the process of having one built for me right now. Your photos make me all the more eager for it to arrive! Have a great race!

Thank you so much. I love it. Can’t wait to Rasey  keep me updated on your bike.

Have you ridden one?
