And Lange just put a super gushy post on IG about how great they are.
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Something is definitely off.

Canyon
I think it’s the terse statement on instagram that raises more questions than answers and suggest some kind of falling out. Seems like that could have been avoided with a little more finessing - “this was the bike that propelled me to the course record at IM NZ, provided several beautiful bespoke paint jobs†etc etc etc
yeah, this is it for me. she doesn’t know me, or owe me anything, but the reason there’s 3 pages of speculation here is that she didn’t get out in front of it with a statement.
might not have been what she felt like doing, but when you’re a pro it’s your job.
Well, if the answer was something like,
Canyon is frustrated with me because I’m not performing and I keep complaining to them about my various bike concerns and they keep telling me their bike is perfect and there’s nothing wrong and I just need to get a proper fit and stick with it, etc. Canyon thinks I’m either dodging work and getting paid without delivering and then pointing to their bike as the issue for lack of success, but I think it’s really an issue because XYZ fit or components that I don’t want to use.
Is that really laundry that needs to be aired?
Or she can fall on her sword and talk about family, baby, emotions, depression, the burdens of being a woman in a mans world, the burdens of seeing the USA tear itself apart politically while she’s worried about the future of her daughter, etc. and make herself look like she can’t hold life together and perform.
All that said, if she wants to cultivate a social media following like Sam Long and Lionel Sanders she does need to perform a bit for the camera. But she doesn’t seem to be showing us that for some reason. It’s a shame, as she could have built a Lucy Charles like following post Kona win if she had started then. But that is a big commitment to open your life up and perhaps not the best decision when it comes to being a mother.
Is that what we want?
I personally, don’t see anything wrong with her post.
that feels like a false dichotomy to me - those aren’t her only two choices when it comes to messaging.
again, she doesn’t owe me anything. just pitching in my two internet cents on this from a comms/management point of view.
Agree, she or canyon don’t owe us age groupers anything. However, we are also the potential customers and this does not look good for canyon. This is not the first thread where fit related difficulties with canyon are discussed…
this does not look good for canyon.
They seem to be aware of this as they have asked every one of their other athletes to post about how much they love their Canyon bikes.
Hi Ian,
Will I fit on the CF SLX with these coordinates?
Pad stack: 615
Pad reach: 540 to mid pad. I have the 51 speedshop pads and my elbows rest in the middle of the pad.
The right Speedmax SLX is a Medium with the long stem and medium extension. You’d need the low spacer.
IanMaybe Ian can help with some facts on how a 5’7" female might have challenges with a Canyon Tri fit.

Nah, not buying that as a reason. Patrick Lange and Sam Laidlow don’t have two podiums to rub together between them so far this season but neither of them are mysteriously leaving their Canyon contract mid-season.

And as most of this discussion has been about height. What are the heights of Patrick and Sam??? They fit on the canyon bikes. Chelsea may feel she does not. You can’t compare the two.

Ya, I imagine Canyon is quite disappointed. They’re likely spending more than they ever have in the past to buy the best in the world talent, bike sales are down, economy struggling, and their stable of top tier talent is getting upstaged by unknown guys from Mexico and D1 college runners. I would be surprised if Canyon isn’t disappointed in Chelsea’s DNFs and DNSs though. I have to assume she sold herself with the contract saying something to the effect of, “look what I did with very little support in Kona 2022, now that you are supporting me I am going to be able to do big things.”
Anyway, I don’t really fault any of them. My experience with professional athletes and manufacturers tells me that at times they can be at odds in terms of what’s working, what’s not working, and what’s the solution or not.

I’m not comparing them at all with regards to fit. I’m saying it would make no sense for Chelsea’s (lack of) performance being a reason for the split at this point in the year, given she is not the only Canyon athlete failing to set the world alight this season.

And you are the one pushing the ‘Canyon can’t find a bike to fit her’ line which others have (rightly) pooh poohed.
“I believe it’s a problem with shorter women and the tri bike. It was designed around Jan as an xl so it can’t be shrunk down to an xs without having to run 650b wheels. Its crazy that someone like Imogen symmonds who is close to 6 feet tall rides the same size frame as someone like Chelsea who is under 5’6â€.
Comment: She’s 5’7”, two inches taller than Matthews and looks like longer limbs.
"As someone who knows most of the details of the situation I can assure you it was not a money issue but a bike fit issue.
Comment: I believe you: at least Sodaro’s perception of the situation. Some athletes are easier to partner with than others. But you might acknowledge that, since her great win in the IMWC in 2022, she can’t have been content with her results in competitive races (so not Aus/NZ) since then and that will have been frustrating. She’s putting the work in so it must be another reason: coaching regime or a bike which doesn’t fit her.
Renewal of her contract with Canyon would have included a “money issue” unless she pulls a race out of the bag in the next couple of months.
“She is testing bikes at the moment but will have a fast one in London. You will just have to wait and see what it is……”@marcag says it’s black. There was an attractive black Italian bike with an Aerocoach cockpit in the hotel. Didn’t see whose it was.

One could argue the fastest bike in the world…

Sodaro is one of the top 7 (to which one might add Hering for Nice).
Philipp has won multiple 70.3s already and gone on to podium in T100 SF. Matthews has won Texas and Vitoria and was second in T100 SF. Both on Canyons (Philipp taller, Matthews shorter). Who are the other women, besides Sodaro, partnered with and riding Canyons who are “failing to set the world alight”?
Read on social media from someone that said the source was “close to the situation” (whatever that means… to be taken with a grain of salt) that the issue was her front end and she wouldn’t ride the canyon aerobars… do other canyon athletes all ride their bars? (look like Matthews, Baekkegard and Laidlow do)

Lionel didn’t. He used Aerocoach all the way up to Oceanside. He uses Canyon now.
If you look at their setups, they are almost identical. Same bottle placement, same BTS…

She’s riding Pogacar’s Colnago?

So if the Canyon marketing value they are paying for is that you buy a Canyon bike and it’s maxed out with the best in class component everywhere, then it makes sense if they are upset they are paying for a pro to support that claim only to have the pro undermine their messaging by essentially telling customers (through their actions) that you need to spend a couple grand extra to get the best front end.
All that said, that is pretty silly, because at some level, surely Canyon just needs to recognize that many of their customers simply have money in their pocket they don’t mind spending.
But again, to support Canyon, if they are paying 50k or more in cash to an athlete, I totally understand why they want more exclusivity and resent the idea of someone else jumping in and getting value out of that same athlete for a couple grand cash and gear.
Riddles…do we consider Ganna or Pogacar the fastest?
Me. Fillippo…she on a Pinarello Bolide?

Evenepoel is current TT world champion but no one likes the Shiv so that’s out.
