Thomas Brunold. Anybody know this guy? 42 year old age grouper from Fitchburg WI finished 5th overall in 9:12:44
No aero helmet, no fancy bike, no fancy wheels. God damn he was fast on the bike.
If anyone knows him send me a DM or find me on Facebook. I got his pictures from the race and finishline.

Correct me by all means if I am wrong, Cervelo P3C with what looks like Zipp 404’s? Since when did that become not fancy and not aero?

If a P3 and 404’s aren’t fancy then I ride a kids tricycle.
I was expecting to see a guy on a road bike with 22mm or shallower wheels.
My respects nonetheless.

This setup is arguably faster than Craig Alexander’s… haha

actually that looks like a 606 set. Maybe not a disc but not the end of the world especially if he races kona regularly and does what two sets of race wheels.

AFAIK Chrissie Wellington doesn’t wear an aero helmet either, although I wouldn’t say that bike or the wheels weren’t fancy!
But I think 90% of STers know in their heart of hearts that “it’s not about the bike” .
I don’t understand ? The 90% bit is fine, it’s a stat, with numbers. It’s the last bit that doesn’t make any sense at all.
No one else noticed how his glasses were inside his helmet straps? For shame, Mr. Brunold!

“It’s not about the bike” is just another way of saying, your speed/time is overwhelmingly down to you and how you perform.
I know, but well done on highlighting that ST doesn’t get sarcasm either.

That helmet is the lightest one I’ve ever seen and well over $200. My GF has one and it’s crazy light.

42 and a 9:12, 5th over all SWEET
.
"Since when did that become not fancy and not aero? "
We are talking Slowtwitch rules. If it’s 10 minutes old it’s outdated and worthless.

if we all could spend as much time in training as we do on cool equipment, we’d all be fast - why is it so much more fun to buy cool stuff?!?
But I think 90% of STers know in their heart of hearts that “it’s not about the bike” .
only 18% of the bike leg is about the bike
with the deltas between bikes being only ~30% of that
so its like 8% about the bike, just for the bike leg, which is only maybe 40% of the triathlon
so its like 3% about the bike!

and 50% of that 3% is downhill…
Sweet Bastards, 3 straps on his shoes with one of them being a ratchet. How does he do it. He could have gone 9:12:43 with different shoes.

I know I don’t need to tell you this, but just to add it to the thread:
3% of 10 hours is 18 minutes.
3% of 2 hours is 3.6 minutes.
I’ll take it.
