bike still matters downhill!

I was expecting a pic of C Wellington.

I’ll take it too, although I suspect that there is more than 3.6 minutes to be found with great vs crappy equipment choices on the bike leg, although I suspect that jack, meant a bit of sarcasm.
That the thing though, on ST, at east to some his bake is off the back, yet if 3.6 is the delta for best to worse bike, the guy in the pic maybe gave up 30 seconds over even the best set up.

it was some really quick napkin math but I think its on the right order of magnitude at least =)

No one else noticed how his glasses were inside his helmet straps? For shame, Mr. Brunold!
They should be inside his helmet straps, so he doesn’t throw his glasses halfway across transition when the helmet comes off.

don’t be ridiculous outside straps is the only way everyone knows that, unless of course you want to argue that practicality and thereby performance is more important than style which the last time I checked it wasn’t!

hey if hes gonna give up 3 minutes by wearing a regular helmet hes gotta get the time back somehow and not chasing his sunglasses down transition may help get 10 of those seconds back .
See Rappstar in IM Canada. Specialized S-works road bike shoes… didn’t seem to slow him down too much. (Boa fastener, however – that thing is a design wonder).
I promptly went on line and bought a pair on sale from specialized.com. Sweet bastards indeed.

It’s a fair point although if he was properly following the etiquette of cycling he wouldn’t be chasing anything anywhere it’s far to uncool, if he was desperate to get them back he could gesture to a passerby to go fetch on his behalf while he was making sure that his laces were all the same length

But he’s not a cyclist in transition so he would be a triathlete again and its perfectly acceptable to look like an idiot when you are a triathlete.
as has been said - he rides a P3.
I rode with him once this summer - dude puts out a sick amount of power @ IM effort.
I assume he done the “math” on power vs. aero - but if he could get a bit more aero @ his power he could probably win IMWI outright.

So a slightly more aero position is worth 27 minutes?

I was gonna say something similar but didn’t want to look up the winning time…
no - but if you do your research on Brunhold - you’ll see that he’s a rather fast runner.
So perhaps riding a low 4:50 @ less than 280 or 290 watts would allow him to run a fair bit faster. At least enough to make it really interesting.
I noticed that his glasses look very similar to mine - just plain ol’ camo-styled shooting glasses from Wal-Mart for $8. In overall time that had to cost him… well actually they are probably more aero than 95% of the high-end brand-name glasses in the race.
No. He’s not going to drop a minute per mile off his marathon time no matter what watts he rides at.
He barely ran that fast in an open marathon. Its not happening.
My contention wasn’t that he could run a 2:43.
My contention was that perhaps he could ride a 4:50, or 4:45 @ somethign more sane - say 250 or 260 watts - which might allow him to run 2:55?
That said - just like the crowie P4 thread - we’ll never know. Looks like Thomas rode without his PT, and we don’t know what his race execution was as: a) He’s run much faster in the past. b) He’s also doign kona.
All I know is that Brunhold is one of the strongest guys I’ve ever ridden with - and a nice guy to boot - so I’m gonna stop debating other folks races now.
Except that being aero on the bike doesn’t shave time off the swim or run, so it would be:
3% of 5 hrs or 9 min. 9 Min being the difference between the absolute best and worst tri bikes on the market, assuming the accuracy of some self-funded research (I assume, though Jack didn’t provide a cite).
By no means insignificant, but definitely blown out of proportion.
No one else noticed how his glasses were inside his helmet straps? For shame, Dr. Brunold!
Fixed your post.
Our areas of research overlap and I am as impressed with his academic work as I am his IM times.
