No CFD, wind tunnel design and flat sides mean they aren’t as fast as the competition and will be harder to handle than a comparably deep wheel from Hed/Zipp.
I believe once upon a time Zipp showed a graph where the 100mm wheel was about as fast as their OLD(pre dimples) 404 across a wide range of yaw.
I raced those wheels for two seasons from Olympics to HIMs to a couple IMs. (Bought one of the early P-X Stealths in 2007).
I would say they were a) a very good deal b) built surprisingly well (never had an issue with them) c) especially for sprints… you probably wouldn’t see any performance drops.
for what it’s worth… I was rode 1hr and change for Oly, 2:15-2:20 for HIMs and 5:15-5:30s on hilly IM courses.
Would better wheels have helped? Possibly/probably… but never had complaints - especially for the money I saved.
Will answer based on my experience: never had an issue handling with these wheels. regular or windy conditions… I’ve ridden on Zipps too… no major handling difference as far as I could tell.
-started racing bikes at 18… now 41… so I’ve been riding for a while.
i think the deal on the last seasons px wheels is really good. this year’s ag 18 winner on lanza rides them and is very happy. dk-schmidt, do you know, if you have to pay customs for the wheels?
As a budget wheel, sure they offer performance gains; and no I wouldn’t go more shallow. I think handling concerns are blown out of proportion but that is one of the big differences in design. If you aren’t under 130lbs, go deep as you can.
I’ve raced and trained on a px set for a few years. I love 'em. No problems at all. I race on a px100 front and disc raer. I also train daily on a px100 rear and either a 50 or 100 front. The set of 100/100 actually handles better then my original 80/100. I sold the 80 and replaced it with the 100 front.
I race a PX 101 front with a Zipp disc. I train on a set of PX101’s, front and rear, or I change the front to a Reynolds 50. The only reason I change the front sometimes is the 50 is a tad lighter and my “flat” ride in Sedona has 1600ft of climbing in just 20 miles.
I’ve never had to true them and they perform perfectly for me. Yes, I’m giving you a few seconds of aeroness over a set of Zipps that cost 4-5 times as much. I can buy at least 4 sets of PX 101’s for just one set of Zipps. I"ll take the PX101!! At my age (56) I’m not in contention for an overall win, but I do place alot in my age group and have very good bike splits in my age group with the PX.
I was sponsored by them this year so I sold my Hed Jets and picked up these. I’ve PR’d every race I’ve done this year and have been very happy with them. Was it all the wheels? No. But they didn’t hurt me like everyone on here would have you believe. The hubs spin forever and they are really light. I ride the 82/101’s.
