Wheel choices similar to zipp 101 (approx 1k, alu brake track)

I’m looking for an all-round wheel for my road bike, something I can train and race on in situations where I don’t want to go with a high-end full carbon wheel.

Alloy brake track, wider rim, aero over weight, ideally under 1k.

The zipp 101 seems like the best choice … does anyone have any other suggestions? I’d go with a Jet 5 (I can get a deal), but I wonder if it would actually be better.

Any suggestions?

get a set of HED Belgium clincher rims built up on a nice set of hubs, CX ray spokes if you really want to get fancy…the difference was noticeable moving to the 23mm wide rims and running lower pressure.

The new Belgiums should be even closer to the 101 (wider, with angled brake track). Not sure when they’ll be available or how close the profile is, but I’m waiting for them myself.

I have a front wheel like these and love it. I think they are being discountined.

Allow brake track, wider rim, aero over weight, ideally under 1k.

Customs with the Kinlin XC279 or Pacenti SL23 would be your best bet. Those rims are a little shallower, but are nicely rounded and probably as aero as the 101. You could get some really nice hubs and stay under $1k.

HED Ardennes, HED Belgium based customs, Kinlin XC279 customs, Velocity A23 customs, Boyd Vitesse and save some cash in the process, Neuvation’s new wider alloy wheelset and save even more cash.

All good options for what you’re describing.

The Jet 5s would definitely give you an aero advantage over any of these at a small weight penalty but if you’re looking for wheels to race as well as train on it’s hard to beat the Jet series. If you go down that path then Flo 60s are another option with alloy brake tracks and a wider rim bed with a nice deep aero cross section, Flo is expected to come out with a shallower Flo 30 wide wheel soon which will likely be another candidate that meets your description similar to the wheels listed above.

Velocity A23 customs

Very un-aero. The rest aren’t bad, but if aero is important I’d stick with the deeper ones.

Good point, they’re pretty shallow IIRC, I also don’t recall how shallow the Neuvation wide clinchers are but I know they’re not super deep.

How soon do you want the wheels? The Flo Climber fits all of your criteria except that it isn’t yet available.

Zipp has a new wheel, the Z30. It has an aluminum rim, wider at the brake track (20.4mm), weighs 1650g and a MSRP of $850. I believe it will be available sometime in March but I’m sure if you call your LBS they can give you more info.

I was in your position and ended up with two sets of shamals,
one tube less, the other not, love them. training and racing
you can find something on ebay for close to 1k

in case anyone is curious, this is what i heard from zipp about the z30 vs the 101

Zipp 30
Parallel brake tracks, x% less aero, Taiwanese SRAM hubs - price point wheel set

Zipp 101
Sloping brake tracks, wider tire beads, lower weight, Zipp racing hubs, Swiss bearings
.

Has SRAM discontinued their S-series wheels? The S30 sounds pretty similar to the new Zipp 30, but I don’t see any of the SRAM wheels (S30, S60, S80) on their website anymore.

Yeah, the product line is being re-branded as Zipp. The marketing manager in me isn’t sure that’s a great idea since the Zipp brand has become synonymous with high-end, hand-built wheels, and this sounds like brand dilution to me.

I’m in the same boat. I haven’t found any rims that check all my boxes that would let me build my own wheels.

FWIW, I’m biding my time until the FLO 30s come out.

You don’t like the Kinlin XC279 or Pacenti SL23?

Boyd Vitesse alloy wheelset. Lightweight - great climbing wheel, bomb proof. 23mm wide, 28mm rim depth. Good components and great price.

Probably not as aero as the FLO30 or the Zipp 101, but there’s this:

I think this is the same rim as the Boyd Vitesse (or it’s very similar).

EDIT: I see that rruff has suggested the same rim, the Kinlin XR-279. The Pacetti SL23 looks a little nicer (lighter, wider, perhaps more aero just by the looks of it) but is more expensive.

On my list for this year is a set of Hed Belgiums laced to DT Swiss 350 hubs. I’ll probably get the hubs new off ebay and the wheelset will be waaaay under $1000. I’m really looking forward to this set.

I have sram s30s. They can be had for 400 new on eBay.
