Very tough times for Sam Laidlow

Thanks for sharing this. It will be interesting to find out what is wrong and, if possible, the cause and solution.
Did going too deep or too hard for to long for too many days cause this?

I speculated he over cooked himself in Kona. Too hard, too hot.
So much so that when he showed signs of problems early in the year I asked a cycling team doctor. He explained he uses a very specific protocol to bring riders back when they went into an episode of extreme over heating. He emphasized the importance of starting immediately after the event.
I now wonder if he properly recovered from that episode.

In 2007 I ran a marathon in April and within a week’s time we went winter / cold Spring temperature to 32 degree Celsius at the start, i went out super easy, race got canceled during the event due to the number of over cooked athletes and no more ambulances available. Still, it took me over 4-5 months before I could run in the sun again, which I normally actually really like.

I think you are right, he went out too fast, to hot and with a non vented helmet he just boiled his brains. Hope he recovers.

You don’t say? Sam Laidlow playing rope a dope another year in a row? Just let him go in Nice guys, he’s clearly not fit and will blow up like he did before…

He has to validate: and I shall assume he’ll delay that (was racing IMSA) and go and race Texas, with all the boys.
Blummenfelt, Iden, Laidlow, (all just validating) + Lange (AQ)
Ditlev? RvB, Skipper, Wurf (he’s on all the start lists), can’t remember all the others

IM South Africa in March would have bee a lot cooler than Houston in April. Done both events, Houston humidity is just misery

It was worth watching the video for the joke at the end, if nothing else.

Sounds a lot like Epstein Barr to me. I had it 3 times in my career, and know of many who also had to deal with this. No cure, just a tone of rest, and complete rest. Trying to train through it just prolongs it. Also could be 1 of dozens of like viruses, used to call them chronic fatigue syndrome. Hope he can figure it out sooner rather than later, as it sounds like he is beating his head against a wall at the moment…

Not so fun facts about EBV
95% of adults will eventually get it

About 2% of cancer deaths worldwide are connected to EBV on top of all the other damage it causes from autoimmune disorders etc.
EBV — The Jenner Institute.

All these viruses we swim around in daily do some wacky things to our immune system over time!

A little misleading. Yes 95% will carry the virus, but not all or I would guess even most will get symptoms or a serious illness from it. I believe it is actually from the mono that most of us get as teenagers. Would be nice to actually have a cure for it, but until recently it was hard as hell to even diagnose it. In my day you had to look for anti bodies to see if you had it, now they can actually catch the DNA of the virus and the different loads your body is under…

That’s a bizarre take. What’s more likely is some have worse symptoms and they run the gamut in severity and scope etc. But surely everyone has had groggy under the weather fatigue, random headaches, etc. why wouldn’t you assume there could be something underlying in the immune system responding to that? From one day to the next people can suddenly feel differently. Heck, even things like depression are now thought to be linked to viruses.

IM SA’s conditions depend very much on the day. It can be a nice 20-ish degrees Celcius with a mild sun, but I remember a year with rain in the morning, followed by the SA sun showing itself in full force, making it extremely hot and humid on the run.

Sam Laidlow isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer that is for sure.

I always question the relationship of athletes coached by parents. Richard is an excellent coach but how much does Sam listen?

I wouldn’t underestimate his smartness tbh. You don’t get there by accident, not in this sport. Gotta be smart at the tip of the spear, especially these days.

People won’t agree with the “sharpest” comment, but I can see why you assess that. You and I would probably say that about each other though.

I could see where it would be difficult for a coach so entwined with the athlete. The coach may see it as defeat to tell his world champion to take 5 months off of all exercise. Add on to that, its his son, and his only coached athlete. And they’re looking at going back to Nice. If this proves to be a needed rest issue, its not unreasonable to have these be the primary factors to his poor performances.
