If anyone spectating at IMLP wants to get in a ride on Whiteface I will be riding on Saturday July 21. This is your chance to ride an Hors Categorie climb (8 miles at 8.5%, slightly harder than l’Alp d’Huez, but only 1 switchback instead of 21). Your ride will be hosted by the unlikely ever to be slightly famous triyoda.
Details:
Meet at Mirror Lake at 6:00 am. On the road by 6:15 am at latest.
Ride loop backward to Wilmington, this is about 13 miles, mostly downhill. Ride Whiteface. If you want to go sub 1 hour I will ensure the pace is adequate. I plan to ride tempo and do 2 x 20 minute intervals during the climb.
Ride down, ride out and back, finish the loop backwards. This includes riding up the Keene hill. Pace will be comfortable although I am going to try to ride the Keene hill at tempo.
Total mileage is about 72 miles. Obviously you are free to skip any or all of the planned route and go back to town anyway that you please.
Maybe breakfast after. Brown Bear is no longer in business, but I tried Charley’s in downtown a few weeks ago. Killer Vanilla Freedom toast and good blueberry pancakes (don’t order four, it is even too many for me).
You guys are bad…yes I am tempted to show up. Someone lock me into my room at the Marriott so that I cannot escape on my Lucero and get some last minute training in before the race on Sunday…then again, Murphy’s Law has already shown that you can do a hillclimb before hammering out Epicman…what’s another 13 miles to try and one up the Hudson Valley Legend?
Seriously though, I am really dissappointed that I did not do Whiteface this year. I’ll have to settle for Old Lahonda and Mt Hamilton in Silicon Valley and hopefully Apex outside Penticton later this year.
I am toying with the idea of organizing a 6 day camp in Bourg D’Oisins end of May next year at the base of Alpe d’Huez. I gotta get you posers to come and bury the Basso times on those climbs

I just need some steroids, EPO, cortisone, peyote, HGH, a six pack of Budweiser, some horse tranquilizers, and three huge bong tokes and I will be ready to ride like Basso (or Lance for that matter). I think all of that stuff is legal in France right? Maybe only if your name is Virenque or Moreau;)
“Hors” climb, you speak great French frenchie. My wife and I are doing IMLP Sunday and I am tempted as I did the WF uphill bike and run this year. WF is no where nearly as hard at Mt. Washington or even Platte Clove Road in Saugerties (done both). Do what my buddy did and then you earn your gold star, ride White Face at 5am (have to be done early before they open the road) then do 2 loops on the IMLP bike course, then go for a 10 mile run in Willimington. BTW, this dude is a Clydesdale (6’0, 260) whose PR Ironman is 10:38. I fell off that day after 50 on the bike.
Even better you could do the Firecracker 540 (RAMM qualifier) starting in LP. If you do a 36 hour splt (for 540 miles) and are under 50 you qualify for 2006 RAAM).
Like Yoda said, my friend, fast people with P3C’s, will be the first to go. LOL.
Last year I used my 34x25 pretty well all the way. That got me up in 58.22 if I recall correctly (definintely 58.xx). Then we followed it up with one backwards loop of the LP course, one forward loop (minus out and back) for a total of 190K+40 min transition run and then a 50 min swim after a stop at subway…that was day 2 of the Irontour training weekend :-).
We posted a thread from last year’s festivities here:
This day was the highlight of my entire year. It was more fun than competing in Kona (although the latter was a very close second, ranked on par with the Epicman training day). Real competitions are great, but nothing like a poser smackdown to bring out the best in athletics and comraderie
The more I look at this thread, the more incomplete my year feels without a Whiteface Summit attempt…no, I will not be joining you studs the day before the Ironman, however, I will try and head over sometime in August for a summit attempt…maybe I can drag some Ottawa tristud and road talent for a day of pain and pay Triyoda for a celebrity appearance so that he can toy with us!!!
Hi Kurt, I want you to lend Triyoda a powermeter so we can download the power file from Whiteface…then bring the powermeter over so that we can put it on my bike and then you guys can have a few laughs when you see the stupid surges that I partake in early in the race :-).
If you go in August i’ll be there (provided i’m in the country). I’ve been wanting to do this for a while but i don’t know the exact start/finish lines to make it an ‘official’ time.
I might be there too. Since I’m biking up from nyc the two days before, my pace going up the mountain may be a bit on the slower side. But, if I make it out of bed in time, count me in.
Oh this is good. Triyoda is going to hammer Kus on the Whiteface Mtn Hillclimb on Saturday and he will be so frustrated, that he will grab all 142 lbs of me as soon as I exit the water by the wetsuit ankles, flip me upside down, and fling my body 2 blocks to T1, all the while holding a dripping wetsuit in his hands…be easy on me big guy! At least I should have a prozone T1
You are planning on doing this the day before the race… There is no way Dev would do such a wussy workout the day before. 72 miles with the Whiteface climb would seem like too much of a taper
