Training Peaks Alternative Anyone?

I’m a coach and use Training Peaks as my tool of choice to communicate with on-line athletes. I’m not impressed but have dealt with it for several years. I recently learned they plan to increase fees from $10 per plan to 30%. A $90 plan will now cost us $30 to sell plus daily athlete fees. What a rip!!! Anyone out there use an alternative software vendor to communicate training plans with their athletes? Thanks. Coach-Tony

I currently use TP for my athletes, but have evaluated WorkoutLog.com

It’s different, but has most of the functionality of TP. I didn’t switch because when I tried it they still didn’t have HR/Power/etc. download capability. They were working on it, though and I think were supposed to have it by the end of the month. I think there is a one-time coach fee and about $6-$8 monthly fee per client.

Let me know if you find anything else. . .

For selling plans I think you’d like the workoutlog fees, $0 last time I checked.

I checked out addaero.com, (possibly adaero), the new trainingpeaks 3.0 looks suspiciously like the addaero interface actually.

I don’t care for that type of interface as implemented, but others might like it, check it out.

I went back to spreadsheets and use wko for power files. I thought TP would save me time, but it actually cost me more time overall to do schedules, check on what athletes were doing etc.

check/test
amongst other things, the automatic interval scanning tool will save you lots of time.

We just had a meeting with WorkoutLog.com and I was impressed. They are a great alternative to TP. According to Andre they will have Garmin upload capability before years end and then will work on Polar.

Cost is great, functions are fully customizable and they have a bunch of things that give it a very “clean” look.

I would look into them. I also think it’s minimal or no cost for selling training plans.

what do you do for logging in workouts? Do they just email you a filled in spreadsheet?

I talk with my athletes on the phone and by email quite often, sometimes multiple times per day. If something deosn’t get done, they tell me we adjust and I send out the changes.

Thanks again for your time the other day and I appreciate the plug here on ST (you too Kev!).

Selling/distributing stock plans through WorkoutLog.com is FREE for the coach and we do NOT force athletes to buy subscriptions to access those plans. Our base slot rates for coaches are ~30% lower than TP. We start at $6 and go down from there with volume.

Feel free to contact me if you would like to learn more. You can see WorkoutLog in action via our how-to video section.

Some highlights:

  • Coach Tips : allows coach to post a resource library for their athlete complete with photos and videos
  • WorkoutLog Mobile : allow athletes to access plans and log workouts via their mobile phones
  • WorkoutMAP : allows athletes to create/save routes via our Google map interface
  • Coach Association: allows multiple coaches to share resources and athletes
  • Athlete Groups: allows a coach to edit ONE plan across multiple athletes

Oh yeah, no coach directory or computer coaching program being pushed on your athletes…why would we want to compete with our customers?

Off to brine my bird for the holiday

https://trainsweet.com - It doesn’t have the analytics horsepower to TP, but it does the basics really well. It’s built more for coaches now (doesn’t yet have the ability to upload data from devices) but it’s a great alternative. And it’s free for both coaches and athletes.

My coach uses race day Apollo and as one of his athletes I have been very happy with it.

That’s good to know. I use it for myself, and when my stable of coached athletes grows a bit, I will definitely use it with them.

Is your coach in the Chicago area?

http://buckeyeoutdoors.com is a decent basic site. From what I know the people who made it don’t really support it much anymore and ipod/ipads hate the site which is annoying. Training peaks is great but is expensive and overkill for most athletes. If you wish to view their workouts you can become ‘connections’ on Garmins site if you and them use those products.

cyclinganalytics.com I’ve had contact with the developer providing feedback on the tools. No current coaching ability but he says that it is likely the next feature he will add. Free for now, will cost money later.

I thought WKO+ was part of TrainingPeaks. Is that not the case?

Former Chicago guy. Now based in Boulder.

in short, there is reason everyone basically uses TP, its the best. if you want to pay less you’ll get less
