Today's Plan vs. Training Peaks

I’m thinking about moving from Training Peaks to Today’s Plan. If anyone has used Today’s Plan would you mind sharing pros/cons?

Thanks,

I moved my athletes over to Today’s Plan. I’m still learning a whole lot and make mistakes because its a new platform to me, but as a coach I am very happy with it. Jim Vance spent a lot of time with me on the phone going through some of the basics, answering my questions, and being an all around great resource. There are parts of it that are a little clunky (which I attribute just to the learning curve), because the clunkiness goes away with some practice and it is extremely powerful. As a comparison, the clunkiness I found / was frustrated with in TrainingPeaks had to do with the architecture of the site and wasn’t going to change. Feel free to DM too.
I know one of my athletes checks this forum once in a while, so maybe they will add their perspective (hopefully honest)!

I made the switch back to Today’s Plan in early 2022. After a few months of getting familiar with the app, I came to the conclusion that TrainingPeaks was the better option for me. I give the advantage for ease of use and analytical features to TrainingPeaks. While there are similarities between the two, I found TrainingPeaks to be a better option for my goals. Plus the support at TrainingPeaks was better for whenever I had questions about the platform.

I’ve tried to switch to Today’s Plan 2x. The first was on short notice and I had a few athletes check it out as well. They split 2/2 on use it or leave it.

This last time I polled my athletes, what they would like to see as far as analytics etc. It as about 1/3 wanting more analytics, 1/3 thinking it was about right and 1/3 who don’t look at their numbers.

Today’s Plan takes longer to write workouts. For instance lets say I write this workout
3h bike w/ intervals

45z2 + 35min @2xx -2yy + 10 z2 + 25 min @2xx -2yy + 10 z2 + 15 min @2xx -2yy + 40 z2 I had to write the warm up then save it, then write the first interval then save it then the second and so forth.

It was just too time consuming from a schedule writing standpoint if you’re customizing everyone. If you’re writing 10 people on 1 plan, say a club or group I think Today’s Plan is a no brainer.

Honestly training peaks sucks donkey balls, it looks like it’s from the 90s, they make minor improvements, the analytics are shit if you want to get into the weeds. It’s probably easier/faster to buy a second monitor and put training peaks on one side and wko5 on the other side so you’re not flipping back and forth for each schedule you write.

I really wish there was something as easy as Training peaks to use that combined the analytical power of wko5, did master billing, branding etc.

The reality is I think the spreadsheet/wko system I was using prior to training peaks was a better solution than training peaks/wko

Thanks,

I’m happy to be a resource. Are you a coach, or an individual athlete?

I think some of the criticism of Today’s Plan on here are because people want it to be more like TrainingPeaks, but it is so much more than that. And for any work which takes longer, it can be leveraged a lot better on Today’s Plan for the future. In the end, the more athletes a coach monitors, and the more detail you want to see, Today’s Plan definitely becomes the better option. There’s a reason why the biggest coaching groups in the world are moving to Today’s Plan.

Thanks, and feel free to DM me.

It is honestly great that you post here.

But my experience with BOTH platforms…I prefer training peaks.

Maybe I don’t need or look at all this data/details you speak of…but when I was using purple patch fitness/todays plan, I found I was missing some functionality I had in Training Peaks.

Todays Plan would not sync with my fitness pal as well and receive that data…and I also did not like the way my run workouts from todays Plan loaded into my garmin…it was very limited with the screen view I had while running and I could not view the data I preferred to see while running…if I still also wanted to follow the planned workout/hr details.

But training peaks plays nice with my fitness pal, and the workouts seemed to sync nicer with my garmin and I could still have the data I wanted to see during my synced workouts. Maybe this was due to how a purple Patch wrote their workouts…I could understand that. But either way I’ve had different plans on training peaks and the workouts synced nicer to my garmin.

I do feel you have a nice product…but I currently prefer training peaks.

After using Training Peaks for many years, I cancelled my Training Peaks account and switched to Today’s Plan in August 2020, and then switched back to Training Peaks in February 2022. I feel like I gave Today’s Plan a legitimate chance but after 18 months made the choice to go back to Training Peaks, largely because the mobile app in Today’s Plan wasn’t very useful for me and I got tired of always needing to go to a PC to see the data I wanted. Also, I use Trainer Road for my indoor workouts and found that with Today’s Plan I had to manually add each of my Trainer Road workouts to get them to sync with my account. That all may have changed in the 15 months since I left Today’s Plan, but I haven’t felt the urge to go back to check.

Celerius,

Are you using chosing as a coach or an athlete?

What kind of advanced analytics or statistics are you looking at in WKO that TP doesn’t offer? Are they for monitoring your own fitness or managing a team, or?

I use TrainXHale.
