The Official Kestrel 4000 thread

Not in full race config with hydration + spare kit but mostly there. SRAM Red Exogram (10-spd) all the way around.

p.s. sorry about the mess in the background.

Maybe include a link about the tri rig brake upgrade? That’s gotta ber a good brake to consider.
(no connection between us and tri rig … )

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a Kestrel 4000 (any year) with Di2 drive train? Would love to ask some questions.

Yes, 2011 LTD model w/ DA 7970
.

Nice looking build! I have a 2012 Kestrel 4000 and love it! The only issue I had, which is common on this frame, is the adjustable rear dropouts. (there are a few threads on this topic) Luckily this never happened in a race, but during a couple training rides the dropout would slip out of place and pin the rear wheel against the frame. I took it back to my LBS and they installed what were supposed to be newer dropouts from Kestrel to alleviate this issue. Took it out for a ride and problem persisted. Since I don’t mess around with tire size, and don’t plan to change wheels anytime soon, my LBS fabbed up a spacer so the dropouts won’t slip anymore. Haven’t had a problem since.

I am having the same problem with the dropouts slipping. Do you have any photos of the spacers I could reference? Would really appreciate your help in this.

I have a friend with the same problem. I’m thinking of filling the slots that the bolts go through rather than the end where the dropout/hanger would butt against the frame.

Which one did you wind up making a spacer for?

I have had the same problem with the dropouts slipping.
After contacting Kestrel they sent me replacement dropouts which were redesigned and had better clamping force. Haven’t had the problem since.
So perhaps you could verify you have the updated dropouts.

It’s a 2014 model, Black and Red, brand new.

How can a person tell if they have the updated dropouts?

jaretj

I would expect the newer framesets to have the updates dropout, but I have no idea.

Iirc the difference was that in the old dropout the 2 screws where just turned into the thread.
In the new dropout they added little bolts on the inside. (and perhaps the diameter increased, not sure).
But it has been a while since I replaced them.

User ‘sharad’ on this forum is the representative for Fuji / Kestrel, he helped me out, so perhaps he could chime in

Thanks so much.

From what you describe I think he has the newer ones.

jaretj

Okay, I haven’t had a problem since.

I did apply some friction paste on the dropouts and some loctite on the screws if I remember correctly. (i never move it horizontally)
Perhaps give that a try.

Thanks again

Mine is a lot more basic than yours.

Basic Shim105 model, 88mm Farsports wheels, I also have a Renn disc, 52- 36 compact chainrings, Profile Svet basebar, Adamo saddle…I’m ready to race!

My rear wheel slipped on my first ride. I took it home, greased the bolts on the drop-outs and tightened them with a torque wrench. I’ve never had a problem since.

I was thinking of using 25 conti gp4000s on my Kestrel. I have 23s on there now and am concerned about clearance. The brakes are a pain to deal with. I suppose I might have to move the rear drop outs too and possibly have chain length issues? I’m tired just thinking about it.

Anyone had any luck using 700x25 tires?

I don’t think you’ll have a problem. I’ve only used 23c tires on the rear but I just measured it and I have 6 mm on each side and 10mm on top. I have a 20c tire on front right now had I have huge clearance. Also, you won’t have any issues with the chain if you move the dropouts back for more clearance. It’s just not that much of a move. Let us know how it works out.

Greetings,

I have a 2013 Kestrel 4000 LTD Ultegra Di2 - it is awesome! Silly question maybe. There are three numbers stamped on the bottom of the BB, which one is the serial number?

Thanks,
-Brad

FYI, my 2013 4000 LTD had the drop-out slipping problem also. My first ride was 1/2 a block, back to LBS. My second ride was 4 blocks, back to LBS. Finally they called Kestrel. The slipping is apparently due to the low-friction of the carbon frame and the fine anodized finish on the drop-outs. The fix was to sand the finish off the frame-side of the drop-outs and applying carbon grit. I haven’t had a problem since.

I was able to get the 25c tire on there without any problems. Well, just the usual because I’m always fussing with the brakes…

I hope I am not being inappropriate here, but I have a beautiful 2010 57.5 cm TT4000 with SRAM Red, Vuka Bars, Shimano Dura Ace wheelset and Fizik saddle. It has now taken a back seat to my Talon for more casual, hilly riding. Is there anyone out there in this thread who might be interested? I am in the San Francisco Bay Area.
