honestly, if it comes to true all-out nuclear war, i’m not certain that surviving is the best.

Prior to Russia attacking a nuclear plant I didn’t think that Russia would use nukes in Kiev. My prediction was Putin/Russia would employ a scorched earth policy much like they did in Aleppo and Grozny. They totally destroyed Grozny until nothing much was left. They are ruthless. They play dirty. They are war criminals. Will they use nukes instead or target more nuclear plants? It’s terrifying to think that I would not be that surprised by anything at this point after seeing the live footage of the hell they have unleashed on innocent Ukrainians.
Damn. Time to buy some property in Montana. Not that property ownership will mean anything in the scenario where all those purple triangles are hit.
You do notice all those black dots in Montana, right ? At least move into land west of those dots. Those dots will have particullary bad all out since they won’t be air bursts, lots of radioactive dirt in those blasts.

I think we’ve likely all mostly bought into a view of what a post nuclear world war is likely to look like that has been exaggerated, or at least, takes an absolute worst case scenario.

I guess we don’t know how it came about, but what I saw appeared to be a fire fight going on at the facility. Of course the Russians shouldn’t have attacked, they shouldn’t be in the country in the first place, but the Ukrainians shouldn’t be defending the place either. Just turn it over, which I think is what happened at Chernobyl, if the Russians show up.
I am in Vancouver, BC. Don’t think we are high priority but Seattle is not that far so if they get toasted we will get the fallout.
I think I am far enough north to survive the first blast of that 3/4 triangle cluster over Columbus.
If that happens I am heading to the UP of Michigan. but now that I think about it, that damn bridge is going to be backed up and it is a long fucking drive and an even longer walk, so maybe the far north of the lower peninsula.

You need to understand that the Russians are not crazy. They are very rational. It is very rational to wipe Florida off the map.
I grew up in Central Montana - my parents house is a couple miles away from the Air Force base who oversees all the Minutemen Missiles. Growing up at school we would always talk about in a doomsday scenario if they would target us first to take out the missiles or if they would go for a highly populated city

I expect there’s a good reason for defending it. It provides a good chunk of the electricity for the country. The Russian tactics will be to lay siege and starve andnfreeze people to death. And an early part of that is removing the power supply to the key cities. No power, no comms facilities, no power in hospitals, no pumped water, and less heating too - its still cold there.

We’re under 10 miles from where the UK’s submarine reactors are built, and where engines for both civil and military aeroplanes, inc parts of the F35 are made.
Here in Europe I am extremely worried about how this is developing, especially as Russian forces bombed the Ukrainian nuclear plant last night.
Putin has lost the plot and anyone who supports killing civilians has lost the plot as well. I have no doubt that unless he is stopped there is a strong possibility he would pull the trigger.
I haven’t slept well since this invasion started and every day just seems to get worse.

I did not predict that. Aleppo is a Middle Eastern Muslim country. Chechnya was/is largely Muslim, and culturally and religiously distinct from much of Russia. The people in those areas are “other.” Those people.
Ukraine was a crown jewel of the Soviet Union. Its people, and the land. Some Ukrainians were iconic heroes of the Soviet era.
My guess was that Putin wanted to pull Ukraine back into the fold to re-take its crown jewel position.
My hand-waving guess is he thought if he quickly decapitated the government and military and said nice things to the civilians, the population of Ukraine re-integrate pretty easily.
This seems to be a recurring miscalculation in history, including by the U.S. A general truism of humanity is we don’t like people with guns coming into “our land” and telling us how to live.

Yes, totally understand all this. I hope you are correct in that Putin won’t employ a scorched earth policy. But how far will he go? It’s only going to get worse and many parts of Kharkiv already look like scenes from Aleppo. And there are miles and miles of tanks lined up outside of Kiev (although it’s unknown as to why they have stalled).
