What’s with the huge cluster of black dots in what seems like relatively unpopulated areas?
Unfortunately I live near one of a handful of Canadian navel bases, so, I’m sure that will be a target albeit a lower priority one.
I assume those are where a lot of our nukes are.
The funny thing about that question is every where I have ever lived has a justified reason for being 1st. In Montana we were first due to the defense missile silos located there. In Chicago it was the telephone communications manufacturing and shipping hub that they would go for first. In South Louisiana it was the oil petrochemical industry they would want to hit first. Then Hawaii is was the number of nukes\ships\military bases. We all gonna die.
I’m at the bottom of Germany close to the Austrian border. If things start dropping i’m running into the Alps with my cat. Unsure how high priority we would be here though.
My mother-in-law is freaking out and trying to convince us to come back to Australia but if shit hits the fan I doubt there would be many safe places left.
My understanding is that if you’re aren’t in the blast zone and you can stay indoors, the really bad radiation decays (is that the right word?) relatively quickly, like in days or weeks. So I think relatively safe places would exist.
This suggest 24 hours is sufficient for the worst of the the threat from radiation from fallout to be gone.
Well that is atleast some form of relief. We are also just starting to thaw out of Winter so I would rather not dive back into another Winter in Australia (pink).
I’ve read that both the US and Soviets exaggerated the effects of nuclear war because neither wanted a populace that would clamor for war. Not that it wouldn’t be hellish but at least from what I’ve seen, it wouldn’t be an end of humanity type of deal.

Germany is an unlikely target. Either Putin uses nuclear warfare on the Ukraine or he goes complete batshit and points them at the US. Bombing Germany is pointless for him. On the other hand Belarus has acquired missiles that reach Berlin - just for kicks.

Right, my layman’s longstanding impression has been that all-out nuclear war would end somewhere between the earth literally cracking in half and it remaining in one piece as a charred cinder devoid of life. I’m not sure that’s ever been entirely true and also, while I’m sure not all warheads are equal:
So if only out of morbid curiosity (I am safely in a “you’re fucked” zone), I’d be interested to know what the true assessment of what all out nuclear war would look like, immediately and after the fact.

We moved off-grid to a more rural area but still we are only a 90 minute drive from one of the purple triangles in the Northeast close to Canada. We have an Army base in my state. We have friends that are in the military working locally.
So if a nuke hit our area I believe we would be dead pretty quickly if I understand correctly. I have no interest in living during a nuclear winter in a post nuclear hellscape. Even currently living off the electrical grid and just having new batteries and inverters recently installed, things would become grim eventually. We are not preppers, just people who do not like living close to other people. Not super prepared for a nuclear reality.
ETA: I remember being terrified for a long time after watching "The Day After " in the early 80s.

I’m on the outer edge of the suburbs, so with enough warning it wouldn’t be hard to jump in the car and drive south. How much warning do you think we’d get?

Google says it’d take about 30 minutes for an ICBM to reach the US, discounting subs I’m guessing. Interesting question is whether we’d even be told it was happening.
