Ruth Astle 2024 income and expenses

Anyone care to write up a short summary?

She had a tough year racing wise, injuries, non starts, etc. So added a lot more expense from last year because of medical and travel, but not much in prize money. She basically broke even after all in, about 60K in US dollars out and in.

Big drain was going to Singapore hoping to get a start in the T100, but never materialized. Good for her putting her in a spot to be next up, just how it goes sometimes…

She made 60k in 2024? She only finished one race.

Sorry didn’t watch the video but I assumed she has other income

She does. She has a coaching gig that supports her. She also mentions savings, and another source of income that I couldn’t make out what it was, but I understood it as a source she had last year but no longer this year.

Some sponsorships, which for most athletes is just a guaranteed monthly income. She stated she was in the 2nd year of some 2 year contracts, and finding it difficult in negotiations going forward now with two lack luster seasons…

Or, you know, click the link…

she used to work for llyods bank something like 12 hours a week

Not sure what point you’re trying to make. Someone else helpfully summarised her numbers already - to the benefit of all users of the forum.

I believe she said she was not including money made from coaching. Only from sponsors, selling kit and winnings

Good on Ruth for posting in an off year. Some pros like Beals stopped sharing during down years.

This is an excellent video.

That is all.

Here’s Clutterbuck’s monthly list of income from tri (new GBR pro this year after Zwift team in 2023). Already KQ from #2 in IM Chat but lost money with crash in 70.3IW a fortnight ago.

If she starts to win races and podium I think she will do well with sponsors. She is very marketable, definitely have the personality!

Definitely agree

As she said in the video, the problem is her to your contracts are up with sponsors and she hasn’t done well the past two years so she’s having a really tough time getting sponsors now

Definitely a catch 22

Are she and Ali still an item? If so, that might open some opportunities that others with her results might not have.

Yes. She can get her foot into every single door in this sport because of that but without the results there’s not a ton to present to partners once she’s in the door. I like her and hope she can stay injury free in 2025.

Meanwhile, up the sharp end, SC medalists prosper if they get stuck into either supertri or T100. (Thorsten’s figures)

I’m guessing most of the sponsors she does get for '25 will be weighted to performance bonuses vs. guaranteed payouts.

Sponsorship is laggy to performance…which, ironically, is why she made as much as she did in '24 despite her lack of racing/results.

From an expense standpoint, she probably needs to stay in Europe and limit travel expenses; with Kona being the one “splurge” (if she’s KQ’d).

I still find it ridiculous that the T100 pays out an end of year ranking bonus, based on your top 3 scores. Just dump the money into the actual racing.
