I go swimming in a chlorine indoor pool 4-5 hours per week. Every time afterwards and basically still on the days I don’t swim, my skin is insanely itchy, dry and wrinkled.
I need to put moisturiser on my hands pretty much every 30 mins to stop them cracking and cutting from the lack of moisture.
Is this a common problem among everyone who swims in pools? What do you put on before/after your swim to stop your skin drying out so much? I want to swim a few more hours a week but am cautious as it will make my skin worse.
Moisturizing Lotion
Any run of the mill CVS bought lotion (Vaseline etc) will work for your body, face may be sensitive to breaking out, so that could take some fine tuning.
I just put it on after I am swimming and showering. Before I change for work.
Same thing happened to me last winter during a swim “focus” block (only 5 days a week). Body hair, eyebrows, etc started to thin out too.
Started showering with Cetaphil (any non-fragranced “sensitive” alternative will do) instead of regular soaps, and moisturizing furiously…seemed to contain it well. Best results were from not swimming so much…
Do you go into the pool wet (shower first?). If you’re skin’s moist with regular water I think the chlorine doesn’t absorb as much. Works for my hair at least, maybe it’ll help with skin?
When I go for a run after a swim, I feel like I “sweat” out the chlorine. My skin feels less itchy and irritated. Even if it is just a mental thing, at least I’m getting another workout…

No I don’t try this. Maybe I’ll look into it. Thanks.

Yea, I get that too. When I have my bike/run workout after work it does this, or if I have a shower before bed I can smell the chlorine too.
That Dermaswimpro looks quite good. I might order some and try out.
Also what’s the deal with showering before going into the pool? Does it work? How long do you have to shower for?
I don’t know about the “shower before you swim to keep from soaking up the chlorinated water technique.”
I put the DermaSwim on before I go to the shower. I only make a quick pass though the shower on my way to the pool. The DermaSwim won’t wash off in the shower. After a 30-45 minute swim, it seems like a lot of it is still there. I don’t wash it off in the shower, and it seems to soak into my skin pretty quickly.
Other than my face, I don’t need to use any other skin moisturizers.
I have always dealt with dry skin / eczema, and the chlorine only makes matters worse, especially in winter.
after the swim, take a shower with Kiehl’s swimmers formula, it’s an anti-chlor that I find works pretty well to stop the damage on hair/skin.
put on a good, fairly heavy face lotion, and coat up the rest of you whatever quality body lotion you prefer.
this is my regular routine, and it seems to work fairly well.
I always shower before I swim (I think it’s a law in NY state). I just get in the shower and wet my hair completely and my body, and then I swim. I also shower (washing myself and my hair) immediately after I swim. I still reek of chlorine though.
I found Goldbond extra strength medicated lotion takes the itch away and moisturizes well. Use lots after swimming because my skin is dry and itches like hell after swimming too…its the lotion in the green bottle…
