Quarq stopped working after 3 months....any ideas

Ok I am not the best guy with all this new technology. My 3 month old Quarq just stoppd working in the middle of a ride. Figured it was the battery. New battery did nothing. My Garmin 500 will sync with other PM’s but reads nothing from mine. Have done the ANT sync a few times…nothing. Sent an email to quarq…no response. Any ideas on how to fix??

Thanks, Tom

they didn’t respond?
try giving them a phone call, the best customer service I have received in my entire adult life is with them, I’m confident they’d love to help you figure the problem out.

Give quarq a call tomorrow in the AM, they will email you a fedex label and it will be a couple day turn around to send and get back from them.

Mieke will probably respond tonight via email though, its not the first time I have seen them email at night.

Have no fear, they will fix it.

Have you tried calling Quarq. A friend of mine had issues with an early copy of the Quarq and their customer service was outstanding.

couple of checks … most important one

did you lose the magnet??? if there is no magnet quarq will not wake up

Where should the magnet be?

T

Either on a metal bracket between the bottom bracket and the Quarq itself or epoxied near the chainstay.

here are pics of where the magnets should be…

Thanks, magnet is still there. Any other suggestions??? I guess I will take it into the shop next week when I have a chance.

Do you have to do anything specific to re-calibrate after changing the battery??

T

no, there is nothing to really do, have you deleted it and re-paired it to your bike computer?

are you spinning the crank arms backwards 3-5 times then let it sit there? After its paired, if it will pair, after it sits for 1-3 seconds my garmin tells me that its found the power meters. generally that’s what I do to wake mine up.

I’m sorry if no one has responded to your email yet. We’ve been short handed lately with a number of us over at the Eurobike tradeshow last week as well as a few folks out sick this week.

If you’re magnet is still there, the next thing to check is to make sure your battery contacts didn’t get flattened. Make sure the one on the bottom has the “wings” up at about a 45 degree angle. You can gently pluck them up with your fingernail. There are a few other things to check, but I think it would be best for you to call our customer service when you get a chance and they’ll run through all the various things to check. Worst case scenario is you’ll have to send it back to us to check out. If you’re in the US we’ll pay for shipping both ways. Usually most repairs are sent back out the same day we receive them or at least the following day if at all possible.

I apologize you’re experiencing difficulties with your Quarq. We’ll get you back up and running as quickly as possible.

Yup tried all those things. Pairing was always instant until it just stopped working in the middle of a ride. Gave some wonky reading for a bit and then the watts line just went blank.

isnt this what jonny is for?

but mieke is sooooo much better than jonny

Mieke is here now, so I will leave your troubleshooting to the pro’s, you’re in good hands!

Tom…you just need to stop putting out those massive watts! Your blowing that poor quarq up

Agreed - the poor Quarq can only read to 4 digits. It was doomed from the start.

I had this same problem in the spring… First I thought the magnet must have been displaced… Fixed that… Still didn’t work… Then I tired the battery replacement… Still didn’t work… Then I tried resetting the Quarq unit per their instructions by pedaling backwards, etc… Bam! The unit jumped back to life… Good luck!

Same thing happened with mine a few weeks ago. There is a magnet on a thin metal shim on the bottom bracket that lines up with the Quarq to “wake it up.” It turns out that the magnet fell off—most likely when it was boxed up after a race. I superglued a refrigerator magnet to the shim and it solved the problem instantly. You may want to see if that is the problem. BTW, I am probably more technologically challenged than you. I only figured all this out after posting my question right here on ST.

If the chain drops off the inside of the small chainring, its possible that it will knock the magnet off of the metal shim, especially if the shim is rotated so that the magnet is not in the preferred 9 o’clock position. So if you look and see the metal shim still there, you might miss the fact that the magnet was off. I think they just bond the magnet to the shim, and as others have said, any strong magnet will work. You need to look carefully and make sure you can see the little magnet, not just the shim and the round spot where the magnet was.

Now you are scaring me! Mine crapped out this morning and I figured it was just the battery. I am headed to Rev3 this weekend, may have to roll old school and go by feel. Oh the insanity!!!
