It’s interesting that a lot of the comments are the same that a lot of websites, forums, platforms have faced in their transitions to a mobile responsive layout many years ago.
More information density isn’t necessarily better. Nowadays you don’t see 19 topics on most news feeds, home pages. Not even on Reddit (can easily compare new Reddit to old Reddit by going to old.reddit.com).
It has been a trend in the past several years that websites have made their layouts less text-dense to improve UX. People skim, don’t read, and less information density works better for that behaviour.
This isn’t true in absolute. Some apps (especially tools that are heavily used on desktops) have a strong requirement for information density. Notably, Gmail and other Google products introduced toggles for information density settings.
Even more on mobile phones. Most websites have the majority of their traffic from mobile these days.
It’s just ironic that for this Forum this conversation is happening several years later than for many other forums.
Something I found interesting was that when I went searching for the T3 thread, and pulled it up using The Wayback Machine on archive.org (it didn’t survive The Snap, so that was best I could do), the First page had the old GREY template, but the Last page was the blue one we just switched out of
So that puts the last forum update at 2012 (maybe not? I think I went to a “snapshot” from 2015, and used that to go back to 2012 — first time using The Wayback Machine, so I’m NOT really sure how it works, sorry)
Agree; white space (or dark in dark mode) is nice, but it’s far too spread out. Adding a user view setting for “compact” like you can do in email clients would be very nice.
You can see both of those. To the right of each thread there are the user avatars. The left most (first left to right) is who started the thread. The last one is the most recent poster. The others in the middle are “frequent posters.”
That information is still available except visually more difficult to see.
While mobile-friendly, less dense layouts work for quick scanning, they don’t suit all users or contexts. Forums like this, where detailed discussions are common, often benefit from higher information density, reducing the need for excessive scrolling.
Yes, Apps like Gmail and Reddit offer users options like Classic View to reduce white space and show more information at once, showing that UX isn’t one-size-fits-all.
A better approach would be offering customization to accommodate both minimalist and information-dense preferences.
The change is interesting. I thought I incorrectly went to the Zwift forums instead of ST. With that said the old version was OLD and any modern update is welcome.
@SlowtwitchSupport - when I’m on the desktop version, I will randomly get logged out of ST. I can log back in with no issues (no need to reset my password). I don’t have this problem on my phone.
This happened to me mid-morning today while on my mobile. I haven’t had an issue since the changeover two weeks ago but today I got logged out as I was typing a reply.
