Poll: Do you like the new forum?

Agree.
27 years in IT here, Senior Analyst. This new format is painful.

No disrespect to the ST folks keeping the forum running, just honest feedback.

35 years in software engineering with my forum use starting with Usenet on VAX mainframe green screens and 300 baud modems to BBS systems. . And progressing through all the generations to the current Teams/Slack/Discord, etc.

It’s not my all-time favorite, but perfectly fine, and a huge upgrade.

So if I find it quite intuitive, convenient and quick, does that make me a weirdo?

You’re not alone and therein lies the problem. It’s the reason that less folks are here these days.

Not sure what the confusion is with the reply button. They work for me.

You can either reply to the thread (not a specific post) which we didn’t have on the old forum. Or you can reply to a specific post like we always have.

The confusion is around the need to now highlight the text in order to reply to a particular user and his/her comments. The new option to reply to the thread in general, while cool, is confusing.

There are certainly some cool/useful features. My issue this morning was that neither of the reply buttons opened the reply box until they opened up a bunch on top of each other and the website didn’t know what to do so it logged me out and gave a series of 405 errors.

Ah ok. You mean the quote feature. You can reply to a user without quoting them. I can see how the quoting feature is confusing as there isn’t a direct quote button like there was before. I would hope they would add this down the road.

There are a couple different ways to quote and highlighting the text is one of them. You can also hit reply to the post, and then hit the comment button at the top left in your reply box. That will add the post you are replying to as a quote.

Though I don’t think a confusing quote function would drive people away from posting.

sure, it might not… but sadly it might… the easiest path is to hit the reply button and type, which i think is to the general thread, which then makes it impossible to follow the many trains of thought the ST is famous for

Before there was only one way. Now it’s different and confusing for many.

If traffic is down, might it be largely due to login issues?

I didn’t do the poll, because, to be honest, it’s insulting.
But I will say being logged out automatically is annoying AF,
especially when my login and password are rejected every time.

Possibly, but it could also be due to the fact that threads are now much more difficult to read and follow. Take my response here for instance. I didn’t highlight and quote you nor did I reply in general, I just responded to your comments. In that manner it’s difficult to tie my comments back to yours. This is a problem.

I mean, this is beautiful. The old forum was full of complaints about it being dated and there being no “reply to the thread” ability. Sentences like “not replying to anyone in particular”, “replying in general“, “just replying to the last post” were nowhere to be found on the internet but the Slowtwitch Forums, which we littered with such sentences.

Now you can reply to the thread or to a post, and if you reply to my post, people can click on the right upper corner of your reply to jump to my post you are replying to. My icon is right there in that corner as a hint. I figured it out instantly and I’m old enough to remember there being no internet.

Clever?

No! It’s confusing! Too many options! Why can’t we just have one option like the olden days :joy:

You can see when someone replies specifically to a post in the top right of the post. See below where you responded to me.

And a few posts up, you didn’t reply to a specific post. You replied to the thread/topic. You can even change it when you have the reply box up. Go to the top left of the reply box and you can swap from replying to the topic or post.

I personally find it easiest to reply to a specific user/post

I also miss seeing which forum member had the most recent post/reply.

Okay I guess I just needed to hit more buttons…now we can see the last few reply authors…my bad.

I hope that it becomes easier for me, and everyone else, because ST has been a great source of entertainment and knowledge ……. I’d hate to see this change cause people to bail.

I think the reply function has changed, or is it just me?

You have two options to reply to a post. Reply to topic (reply button at the bottom of the thread. Or reply to post which is at the bottom right of the post.

If you reply to a post, you will see the top right of your post show like I have highlighted above which shows you replied to me. You can actually click the avatar and it will show what post someone was replying to.

You can also change whether you reply to topic or a post while you have the reply box open.

My growing pains are real… LOL… thank you for the help!
