PMP - Jargon Overload

I’m doing a PMP (Project Management Professional) virtual class this week, and while I know we have lots of acronyms and jargon in the military, holy fuck it’s almost like people are getting paid to make up nonsense jargon for business process and project management ideas. The more silly and detached from normal usage of the words included, the better.

You lost me at PMP.

You have my deepest condolences.
Got mine about a decade ago. Renewed once. Just let it slide a few months ago.
Been a PM trainer and consultant for almost 35 years. PMP may have opened a few doors. Maybe.
Good luck. Memorize earned value, so, you can forget about it. If you need it, look it up!
Oh well.

I’m PMP certified and feel your pain. The jargons/acronyms are like an IED field.

I don’t even know what to call it, but do they use the catchy everyday jargon too.

“Let’s parking lot that.”

“Let’s put a pin in that and circle back to it later.”

Early on, there was a slide explaining that meetings are actually called ceremonies and documents are called artifacts. I knew it was only going get worse from there.

I got a Masters in Project Management and then went to take the PMP test and decided, I’m too old, no time for that shit. Good luck, I hear it’s not the easiest test. I’m working for a defense contractor and the acronyms are mind numbing, they even have an area on the company’s site to tell you what they all mean.

So I guess you’re looking at Project Management for the next stage of your life. Project Management is great, you are required to get everything in order, get it on time, with quality, and at a competitive cost, without any authority whatsoever.

GM built an acronym finder into its company search. The best part was when a result came back with half a dozen or more matches.

Toward the end of my career I started working more with the autonomous team, and they had an acronym that we used often in N&V (forget what it was) but was a totally different meaning. Would suck in a meeting if someone used it cause I would be trying to understand what they meant for a few minutes till I recalled oh no they meant this, by then the conversation was on to something else and I was lost.

I told all new hires, if your a meeting and anyone uses an acronym you don’t know and I don’t care who it is, stop them and ask them what it means. I guarantee you there is at least 1 old timer there who also has no clue, and will be glad you asked.

CPSM, CPM, CPIM, CBM, CLM, PMP, CSSBB, VMA
I had a former customer and this was listed on his business card. Funny thing was, he was one of the worst contacts who I dealt with. He could test like crazy but he had no idea how to deal with real world day to day issues.

PMH of CVA, AF on OAC, DVT/PE, ILD, COPD on 2L nc, CHF EF 25%, OSA, HTN, HLD, DMT2, PVD, CAD w/ 2V CABG, CKD3 and allergy to rubber gloves.

I don’t wanna hear it.

Wait until you get into the fun of scrums! Let us know when you get to the heart of project management - ‘managing a project that meets good, fast or cheap, pick 2’.

My last employer wanted me to get the PMP cert. Looking into it, I figured if I really wanted something of value, I’d get my masters in project management, considering both would be in my “free time.”

Early on, there was a slide explaining that meetings are actually called ceremonies and documents are called artifacts. I knew it was only going get worse from there.

if they get around to human sacrifices by the high priests, keep us in the loop

Omg. PMP and the others such as Prince are something I’ve refused to do. It would drive me insane. It’s a nonsense. As if people couldn’t deliver successful projects and programs without a certificate

It’s a total grift

It seems to be one of those certifications that might be a nice to have on the resume, and since it’s entirely free for me through an organization that provides career counseling and opportunities to transitioning veterans, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I think it’s usefulness depends

Some firms do insist on it, others a desirable and if you want to work internationally it can be helpful

Equally, it’s possible to get senior roles without it.

Depends what you want to do.

I have a good amount of time after this course to study and take the certification test. If it turns out I get a job between now and then that is clearly never going to require it, I may hold off, but I’ll probably make a go of taking the test at least once, since the first test fee is covered by the veterans organization for me.

I agree. Seems like an exercise in memorizing useless jargon. I don’t think I learned anything particularly useful.
