I recently purchased a pair of Planet-X 60mm carbon clinchers - perfect price point for my budget. However, after reading all the buzz and test results on FLO wheels, I am reconsidering. I would be interested in getting some opinions on whether it would make sense to sell the Planet-X wheels and invest the extra ~$300 in the FLO wheels. I should note that I am relatively new to triathlon (starting 2nd season).
I am not sure how to answer your questions, but I am a triathlete on a budget also and would be more than happy to buy your Planet X wheels if you decide to go with the Flo wheels.
I wanted to go woth the Flo myself, but my wife has put the brakes on although I could squeek money for a used pair of Planet X.
Let me know if you decide to sell them… mike.leach68@gmail.com
FLO said on this forum that it wouldn’t guarantee having your wheels for the summer triathlons, so I wouldn’t rush to sell anything if you want to use either set of wheels this season.
Thanks for the reality check, knowing the timing of things is very helpful. Seems that it would make sense to stick with the wheels I have and reconsider for next year. It will also help the decision making process to hear the experiences people have with them this year.
I LOVE my Planet X wheels, and from a fiscal standpoint they are tough to beat. On a personal level, their customer service has been stellar, I am active duty military and they were more than accomadating to me! That being said, I am thinking of pulling the trigger on the FLO disc because Planet X doesn’t have an offering there.

ummm maybe this will all dissolve April 1 Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
.
I don’t think you’d be gaining anything by going with the flo wheels. They are on the heavy side as well (over 1800 grams for the 60’s).
Hard to beat the Planet-X customer service.

Heavy? And even if they were, whats your point? Their weights are right in line with the likes of HED Jets and SRAM S series.
And, yes, you most certainly would be gaining something - speed! Unless I’m mistaken, Planet X is still using an old V shape. Even the toroidal design of the SRAM series are considerably faster.

They are over half a pound heavier than the Jet 6’s. I guess it’s a personal opinion as to whether or not that is considered ‘inline’…
Hey, I’m not even saying it necessarily matters. But the poster was asking if he would gain anything by switching wheelsets. IMHO going from the V-shape to a heavier wide rim, is not going to make much difference for your average rider, outside of $$ spent.
If I’m not mistaken (and, I’m not), one of the Flo guys recently posted the verified weights of the Flo wheels, and the 60’s were :
Front FLO 60 - 875 grams
Rear FLO 60 - 1061 grams
= 1936
I forgot that HED pulled the plug on the standard build (anyone know why?). So for 2012, you are correct. But you’re comparing a $1900 wheelset to a sub $800 wheelset. I’ll save over a $1000 and take on 300 grams for the same performance any day.
And you arent serious about the V shaped rim versus the latest in wheel design (or even the older toroidal design)? Try the search feature.

Paging Jackmott.
I agree on the $$ part, thus my recommendation for the OP. He already has his PX wheels, and was thinking of spending an extra $300 to get a different, heavier wheelset. And he was wondering if it was worth it. I gave my opinion. If a few seconds here or there is going to make a difference for him being on a podium, then he is probably looking at the wrong wheels altogether…
Yes, HED’s are much more expensive. I was simply addressing the fact that you (and a few others) keep saying how the flo’s are about the same weight. It is not a correct comparison.
Kind of surprised at the weight of the Flo’s. I know aero trumps weight in general (wonder what the break even point is on that?), but over 1900 grams is pretty darn heavy. Heavier than my carbones, which are considered pigs…

Everyone is referencing the standard build HED Jets which for some reason are no longer in production. Comparing the FLOs to those wheels puts them right in line.
Jackmott put together a spreadsheet detailing the whole weight vs aero debate. I’m too lazy to look for it though.
I know they are referencing the older model, but they shouldn’t be doing that, not really an accurate comparison for people currently in the market.
Anyway, all that said, if I didn’t have a wheelset, and were in the market for a ‘carbone’ style wheelset (rim + fairing), no doubt the flo’s would be on my short list. My reply was just with reference to the OP’s inquiry of ‘value’…different for everyone.
Confronted with the same exact question last week. I pulled the trigger on the planet x wheels. Couple of reasons, if FLO is faster (probably true) how much? and if they are 30 seconds faster over 40k (doubtful) is that worth your 300 bucks. To me, no, I’m not that close to winning any races, i’d rather have the 300.00. I got my planet x wheels yesterday, mounted them and couldn’t be happier. Will i be faster? don’t know, but it looks cool and i’m happy.
