Paula Findlay 2X Canadian Road Time Trial Champion

Did anyone see Paula start on the broadcast? I am watching on GCN+ and saw the riders before and after her at the start.

No camera on Paula unfortunately

33rd now at the first split +1:33 to Chloe
.

Nope. Haven’t seen her. Curious to see where she places.

Dygert, put this in a hard place to get to. Surprised Rouser blew.

Yep. Losing a good bit of time.

No sight of her finishing either, bummer there

But up to 21st for now, looking at a top 30 result when said and done
.

Reusser didn’t blow, she’s injured from a crash in the Mixed Relay TTT
.

Did she confirm that the DNF was due to that crash? Yesterday she indicated it wasn’t affecting her.

You really think a rider of Reusser’s calibre is going to “blow” not even halfway into a time trial?

Do you have a link to the results?

Thanks!

25th OA and + 03:41 back from Chloe

Very respectable. Interesting that the other Canadian woman beat her by ~30sec. Wondering how her legs were feeling after stressful travel + PTO race last weekend.

Yup, definitely not an ideal lead up to the race. Looking at the times, I think Knibb with an ideal fit on TT bike and ideal lead in would crack top 10 considering she normally puts minutes into Paula at a 70.3.

“The other Canadian woman” aka Olivia Baril finished 29th overall at the Tour de France Femmes. I imagine all that climbing helped for this course.

Kudos to both women - a solid day for Canada.

Should have mentioned her name, my bad. Paula put 34 seconds into Olivia in the Canadian nationals TT, so a relatively big swing there between the two events.

My thinking is that the Canadian TT required minimal bike handling skills. Basically a big flat out and back with a couple 180s. The worlds course had climbing and turns, which Paula probably took much more cautiously than full time professional cyclists.

I don’t see it at all.

Stats are: 195 m vertical for 36 km. U23 men’s winner avg speed was over 50 kph and 46 kph for the ladies i.e. fast rollers that suit powerful rides but other than sharp short ramp to the finish line, the course rewarded good W/cda more than W/kg. I think Olivia Baril simply had a better rider than Nationals.

Yeah - the elevation profile was a little deceiving. My bad.

I think it was more technical - more high speed cornering. I saw a clip of Chloe Dygert hitting almost the edge of the pavement through a curve - takes skill to nail those at high speed.

I certainly think its possible with anyone. Not saying the injury wasn’t part of it, but the only thing she said was she was off today and couldn’t push (maybe she didn’t want to take the excuse). If I was her and down 30 seconds, knew my legs weren’t right I wouldn’t ride the full course either. She isn’t going for second.

I’m sure the crash did something though. Whatever happened, I don’t think she was getting to Chloe.

Maps and profiles for roads in Scotland like a lot of roads in Europe don’t tell the whole tale. They seem to be going up and down subtly all the time and twisting and turning . . and narrow as well, and often lousy pavement!

The course at the Canadian Championships this year was a double out and back on a straight road with one less than 90 degree turn!

This was about where I thought Paula would end up. I’m sure a more specific prep (No PTO Race last weekend, and no ongoing triathlon training, and a good focus on the bike handling to do better on this kind of course) - could have possibly had here up into the Top-15 to 20 places!

While this was going on Canada went 1- 2 in the Junior Women’s MTB XC Race! Isabella Holmgren wins in the same year the UCI Cyclocross and MTB XC Junior World Championships!

I was there in person and can confirm: the best bike handlers / strongest athletes were much faster through the corners. I saw Paula Findlay go past about 2k from the finish - thought she looked strong / in control - and 3:4x down on the world champ seems like a very creditable performance for a Triathlete against the very best TT’ers in the world.

Why get carried away? Why dismiss the professional women cyclists? This is their specialty. They are also talented. Knibb would not make the top 10 as a triathlete. If she were to convert to cycling and do work and not just show up for time trials, then perhaps it wouldn’t sound so silly.
Watching the rudimentary preview of the course, there was no way PF was making the top 20. It’s a real course not a national level tt.
