Yes, I kind of mixed up where the first lap ended. It wasn’t made clear on the first go round where the timing chute was…and it was about 2h, so a bit bleary-eyed and hazy.
Here is startlist for the men. Wellbrock, Paltrinieri etc. There is even an Aussie names Sloman (for a second I thought it was a giant ST plot with Empfield getting a celebrity wildcard haha)
My flight gets to Paris at 6 am, so maybe I can catch the tail end. But I suspect these folks are doing in sub 1:40 (done at 9:10 am) even wth that current given how strong they are

The reason I ended up not going is because trying to find a hotel that cost less than $500 a night and up, was impossible.
My wife took one of our kids for the beginning couple of days. They stayed at the Marriott a couple blocks from the venue and where a lot of the swimmers were staying. It wasn’t nearly that expensive, but maybe they booked early enough…
I just looked and it was under $200/night before tax/fees

Nah, the fastest I’ve seen in flat OW is 1:49 at the London Oly, so I expect they’ll be around 1:53ish, maybe 1:52 high.
Titmus - she holds that breath pattern on the 400m which obviously has a big aerobic component to it. So she can somehow hold the stroke over 400 perfectly well. I don’t think its the stroke and breathing patterns. Reality is Ledecky is just the bench mark endurance swimmer and when the distance goes to 800 and up no one has been able to hang with her since she came onto the scene.
Sun yang - I would be interestd to know what others think but the other part of it is that he uses the double breathes down the pool to keep air in his lungs, and also rotate a bit more on the off breath to just loosen the tension in his shoulders and body as well.
Then again you still have some big DPS swimmers like Horton and Romanchuk (28 strokes 1500m) who are both shorter than Sun Yang (so arguably bigger strokes?) who didn’t do the over breathing down the middle of lap . Both swam in the 1430s at their best and Romanchuk was ahead of the WR at around 1300 but fell off it as he didn’t have the closing sprint.

Ok made it from Charles de Gaulle airport directly to Seine in time for loop 3!!! These guys are flying with the current !!!

Well, the winner Kristof Rasovsky of Hungary went 1:50:53 so I was a bit off. None of the favs made the podium with Wellbrock at 8th and Palt somewhere below 8th.

Rasovsky was the favorite, and man did he swim a very brave race. Like the mens 1500 run, he just took off early and never got his nose out of the currents, out and back. And had enough at the end to make sure in the last 1k that anyone going into the current to pass him, immediately got stopped and relegated to his feet again. Great race with real tactics in play throughout. Wiffen had a tough time, but expected because of his lack of experience, kind of like when Grant Hackett had a go at OW…Think the put OW guys love to Boss those pool swimmers that think they could just walk over and be in dominant positions…
And to waverider, I think the whole breathing thing is towards the end of its transition, but a few like Titmus are still hanging onto old technology so to speak. Of course you can give me all sorts of examples of this or that person swimming fast while hold in their breaths, but I propose it is in spite of that breath holding, and they really could even be faster. If you look at the top end of the pro side of the sport in the past 30 years, it is pretty clear that breathing more has been a thing, and nearly all of the folks are on board with it.
And I just noticed in the OW mens race that Florian is also a double side breather, as well as a couple back markers I caught. Of course this all started in 07 or so, and like breathing every stroke is 99% of the racers now, I think in 10 years you will see over half the distance folks doing double breaths, as well as underwater turns that look like the 200 guys…
So just got to watch the bronze medal match for women, the USA vs Nederland’s…And what a game, US ahead by 3 goals with 4 minutes left, it gets tied up with 9 seconds to go and the US let a last second goal get in. Heart break for sure, but I believe the best team won, their defense with such a big lead really let the whole thing down.
And so many shoot outs this games, thought this was going to be another one if not for 2 seconds…
Flavor Flav must have been devastated…
Well, my old friend Tim Hinchey and some others are out.
Overall, I think USA had a fairly good Olympics, more so for the women.
Cost of trials and such and other issues were probably a problem.
It’s tough for a CEO to last for more than one Oly cycle.
Welp - hate to say I said so, but yeah, this was coming…
