Jeffcoat has now come out and said she was removed from the start line as well.
She is currently based in Banyoles, self funded and worked really hard this year to get her ranking back up to auto qualify for WTCS races.
I am not sure what logic they used to remove her. When they removed Hoitink they said the policy was you had to be within 3% of the lead swimmer in World Cup races. Jeffcoat is a lead group swimmer so that clearly is hogwash.
Basically the policies have been changed to 100% discretion, irrelevant to their previous qualifying standards. If you havent been competitive (medal potential) this season then unlikely to be selected even if you have met the season auto selection standards.
The only thing I can think they are trying to do is scare the athletes into working even harder. This to me seems a bit insulting, as if they believe the athletes have just been holidaying and mucking about. Whomever came up with this idea appear to have no idea how hard it is to achieve tiny improvements when you are already working to your max and the actual level of competition is also improving. There doesnt seem to be any strategies put forward to help them improve other than…just do better. If anyone comes out and suddenly improves I will be looking at them suspiciously not applauding.
McClusky ranked world 38 and WTCS 142
Jeffcoat ranked world 83 and WTCS 154
Why is McClusky selected and not Jeffcoat. Hard to see the difference based on WTCS ranking.
Copeland ranked world 30 and WTCS 27
Hoitink ranked world 66 and WTCS 39
There is a bit of difference between those two but why wasn’t Hoitink even considered for the grand final but Copeland was immediately entered.
It appears sexist and biased but I am not very close to it. My personal opinion is Hoitink was biased due to the problems she has had with AUS Tri and now being coached by Jamie Turner (who was terminated and I believe used to be Jeffcoats coach as well). I think Jeffcoat and Hoitink are now outside of HPU Aus but not certain.
I am not sure if people know but Aus Tri sent Hoitink to her first WTCS race unsupported. Emma Snowsill flew from Spain to Cagliari because she didn’t agree that a development athlete should be unsupported.
I think McClusky was ranked much lower world ranking when the start lists first went up. He has had a good world cup or more since which upped his points to what they are now.
Stuck on a train today listening to podcasts etc. Aus Tri appears to be a huge cluster 4ck.
Oceania (won by Hoitink) 10 Aussie women, Wollongong (Hoitink 7th and 1st Aus) 8 Aussie women.
Hoitink was the only athlete not given a uniform, only discovered at the 1st race briefing. After winning the Oceania championships (or possibly after Wollongong) she was asked to do a tv interview and the rules state that you must wear a uniform. When she asked for a uniform she was told to wear a white T-Shirt.
When she went to Hamburg she already knew she wasn’t selected for Paris. At the start line to Hamburg as she was introduced she handed her kit to 2 Aus Tri staff who turned their back and refused. A US-Tri official saw it and was so shocked he tapped her on the shoulder and took her belongings for her.
She changed coaches and moved universities to stay within the AUS HPU. That coach was then removed and her funding at risk. The choice she was given meant leaving university and training in the Filliol group (who was sacked 6 months later by Aus Tri). She was removed from HPU when she went to Jamie Turner and has remained unfunded since.
Whilst waiting to hear if she was selected for Paris she was contacted by the AUS-Tri psychologist (who had never contacted her before) and asked her if she needed any help (not being selected for Paris). That was THREE days before she was officially told she wasn’t selected.
Surely that can’t be true? After all, Michelle Cooper was leading AusTri at the time and she says in the World Tri President election manifesto:
Empowerment Through Sport
I believe in the transformative power of sports to empower individuals. By providing opportunities, resources, and support, I aim to help everyone reach their full potential.
Michelle Cooper, one and same.
Also, Aus tri support staff have never been good at supporting athletes, unless they are a favourite. Ellie isn’t a Queenslander, that alone puts her on the back foot with the support staff.
I do understand their non support of her now coach though, as he was sacked for a very good reason. He may get results but that doesn’t make him a good person but she shouldn’t be penalised.
Well Cassandra gave everyone a 100m head start and is now in control of her destiny and poised to win this thing. Front group of 12 stayed away, Gwen, GTB, and Tersch were left in the 2nd group for a good trio of runners. But looks like Gwen just got dropped in the run by Perriat and Tersch, so perhaps those two can sneak into the top5 to 7 now…
