To better serve the diverse interests of our community, we have made the choice to introduce an [[invite-only category for political topics]] within the Slowtwitch Forum. This will be done by creating a separate category, “Politics Is Life”. This will allow for easier moderation by a small group or highly trusted moderators and to help make the entire forum a more enjoyable experience for everyone. This change will allow for political topics to be available to members of that community.
Once this process is in place all political conversations will be moved to the category and will remain there. Much like the past when a moderator feels like a topic needs to be moved, they will move it and let the users of the topic know that it has been moved. This will allow for all political back in forth to be in one location on the forum.

Once you accept the invitation you will want to make sure you add “Politics Is Life”category to your highlighted left column. This can be done by editing your sidebar by hovering your mouse over the Categories tab. Effective immediately any NEW topic should be started in that thread. Over the next couple of days we will be slowly migrating topics from the LR over. We understand that this will take some users some time to get used and the moderators will make sure we are as patient as possible with any reminders that users will need over the next week or so.
We hope this will allow for the discourse to continue.
Thanks, Eric. I appreciate this change. I think this will be a good balance between keeping the lively political discussion while also making sure every second thread doesn’t devolve into a “hey look what trump did five seconds ago” conversation, which I have found pretty annoying as of late.
Is it possible with the forum software for us (either individual users or management) to create a combined view of threads from the Lavender Room and the politics forum so we don’t have to click back and forth?
If the alternative was shuttering the LR or putting it behind a paywall, this is better than that, but still a considerable downgrade from what we have had for the past twenty years imo.
You might be able to accomplish this in the Topics view, instead of the Categories view, and adding both Categories to your personal watch list (that’s buried in your personal preferences → Tracking tab).
j/k I almost posted a facetious comment that they doubled my workload since I now have to click between two sub-forums to read the off-topic stuff. I’ll manage, I guess.
Look @windywave@SolaDeoGloria I get it… But it’s this or we ban politics all together and for the long term users I am trying my best to find a solution that works for both of us.
It would be nice if the Politics forum was on the left side to easily click into. I see all forums on the left side except the new Politics one. Am I missing something?
