New Half IM in Kansas City

Just found out today by word of mouth that a new Half IM race will be held in Olathe, KS (KC,KS suburb) May 7, 07. Its not on trifind.com yet so wanted to get it out there. I believe its done by the same group that does the Topeka Tinman. Its going to be called the “Big O” triathlon, and the website will be up around Jan. 1, 07. Im considering this race!!

Did you mean May 6? The 7th is a Monday!

Do you know any more info?

Sorry… Its says the 6th of May on the Topekatinman.com website…Sure more info will be out soon

Cool, Im originally from that area. Grew up in Lawrence. You go to school there? (I guessing because of the RochChalk) I might come back home for that. Can’t do it this year. Doing the White Lake Half that same weekend in NC. Ill be interested to read your race report and maybe put it on my 2008 race calendar. Oh, May 6th is a Sunday, not a Monday.

Yes, went to KU. Two degrees there. Tried for the “jayhawk” name but already taken. Even though KS is not hotbed for triathlon it is plugging along with new races and new triathletes just like rest of country. Go Hawks!!!

Is Clark Campbell (sp) still coaching at KU? I was in the KC/Lawrence area in the lat 80’s and remember him and Wes Hobson racing in the area.

yup…Clark is at KU.

The BIG O!! I love it! Do you know where in Olathe it will be??? I’m guessing Heritage since there is already a triathlon out there? That lake is pretty nasty tho …

Lawrence needs a half-IM …

Cool! I’ll have to put this one on my list for the future since it’s so close to home.

PS–Too bad about the KU thing.
Me? KSU '84

Here is some info from www.midwestmultisportraces.com

• The Big “O” Half Iron Triathlon, Half Duathlon & Sprint Triathlon: A Half Iron Distance was requested to be put back on the calendar! You ask and you shall receive. The Big “O” will be held May 6 th , 2007 at Lake Olathe, in Olathe, Kansas. This race will crush all challengers! The hills in this area are steep and painful! You better bring your “A” game if you want to conquer The Big “O”. We haven’t forgotten all of the short course athletes. The Big “O” will host a sprint distance to kick off the triathlon season. Start training now I feel sorry for both of you in your school choices. MU - 96’ Mark

Ah that should be a GREAT area for the race! We’ve ridden out there and there are some monster rollers (for Kansas) out around that lake! Perfect!

I’m not a huge fan of KLM races tho … after watching the RD freak out on some athletes at the Xterra they put on it sort of rubbed me the wrong way …

Clark is the womens swim coach. I was in college the same time as him and did some long ride around Clinton Lake with him (when he was starting to race pro) and remember just sucking his wheel and hanging on for dear life. He was just spinning and I was anaerobic!! He was notorious for his ability to do huge volume sets when he swam for Kansas Univ.

I’m interested to hear how this turns out. We’ve got some club members who have done KLM races before and they were awful. Maybe it was just a fluke thing. Make sure and post race reports for those of you who go (although we’re still a ways off, aren’t we?).

so this weekend now has .
St Croix
Wildflower
Bradenton 101
…and Kansas city 1/2

----have i missed any?

Devilman tri in south jersey.

They do the Topeka Tinman which is run very well but it has been around for 20 yrs, I guess we’ll just have to see what happens…

Kathy, Kathy, Kathy, first you misspell your own name then I find out you went to the wrong school. What else can go wrong.

Crap, I just now looked at my race calendar for the first time in months. I see this race is almost exactly 2 months away. I haven’t done shit since October. There hasn’t even been a chain on my bike since then. I guess I better get on it, huh? But not until tomorrow’s hangover goes away (Dropkick Murphys in KC tonight, for those in the area).

Napa half and sprint tri that weekend.

I think it’s way too early in the schedule for that race to go over well. I live in KC and train on those roads. Great chance it will be chilly, 100% chance it will be very windy (the wind is insane here in the spring) and there are a couple conflicts with other events that same weekend. If it was a month or even 6 weeks later, I think this would sell out pretty quick despite being the first running. BTW…I’ve had great experiences with the few races that KLM put on. Maybe this was the only slot they could get this year…
