Navy Seal swim technique, video

Stumbled across this on Youtube, very interesting.

I’m going to wait for someone to confirm it isn’t Rick Astley before I look…

It’s not.

confirmed real.

Strange stroke indeed

Q. When does the combat start?

A. The start of IMMOO

I’ve seen somebody at the pool a couple of years ago swimming with that stroke and I’ve always wondered if it was something they came up with on their own… he was no slouch either, for sure less than 2:00/100m. Thanks for sharing the video, I wonder what would be the advantage of swimming with this stroke vs the traditional freestyle, or does this stroke work better while wearing gear and/or fins?

My guess is that stroke can be used both at the surface and underwater, that is why it is taught.

My guess is that it minimizes both time spent and body exposed at the surface. With your back never parallel to and at the surface (as in the crawl), a pack on your back wouldn’t stick up.

It looks very quiet with no slapping of the water.

ok watched the swim and then just had to watch the chimp vs Navy Seal You tube video as well…pretty funny… .Chimp did pretty well on his own.

I was a little disappointed because I always root for the Army.

maybe that’s the stroke to use for silent ambush in the dead of night.

I thought they usually swim with their hats on…and watching the stroke confused me…but looks sorta like a swim drill to help you time your kick with your stroke? I dunno…still figuring out the swm stuff…LOL

That’s the Trudgeon Crawl stroke! If my swimming history serves me correctly, it is one of the older strokes and is the ancestor of the modern freestyle. I think I had to learn that at the Y to get my Minnow certificate back in the 60’s.

This stroke has some advantages if you are swimming in clothes, and/or laden down with gear that will be causing drag and probably making it hard to stay at the surface.

Proper and efficient freestyle depends on a fairly constant state of motion and remaining basically level at the surface. The scissors kick in the Trudgeon stroke gives you some power so it is good if need to re establish your momentum between each stroke and/or get back to the surface. Because at least one arm is recovering out of the water and you are getting a full freestyle pull, this stroke should be faster than breaststroke and its more efficient.

I read the comments on the Chip vs Navy Seal video and looked up the guy, he was killed brutally in Iraq. So sad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Helvenston

The arm recovery comes out of the water on the trudgeon.

Exactly. Quiet. minimal surface disruption. very little wake. minimal elevation of anything above the surface.

Over the years, I’ve seen several people using this stoke or some modification to this stroke and they ALL were swimming around 25s/25m, that’s 1:40 per 100m AND they would be doing it over a long distance, 1000m or more. Not bad, especially when you’re just trying to do 1:16 in an IM (that’s 2min/100m). I’ve always thought about trying it, but could never get around to trying a different stroke. May be worth a try, especially if your stuck at a somewhat slow speed anyway.

I am trying to picture 2000+ swimmers shoulder to shoulder all doing that scissors kick.

yeah, i saw two service men in the pool practice that about 3 weeks ago.

It’s called the side stroke. It is used as a combat and survival stroke. It is very very easy to do for long periods of time without tiring and it can be fairly fast if done properly. It also keeps a low profile in the water with very little noise or splashing.
