My dog's workout

we have 7 dogs at the compound. 2 of them are wanderers. i built 2000’ of 5’ high fence to keep them and the horses in, but 2 of the dogs just sail right over that thing and go wandering for hours at a time. i have no idea where they go.

so this morning i taped a garmin 205 to one of their collars. this is the workout gabby did today (the newest recruit, a german shepherd that we found just about dead, wandering around the forest about 3 months ago). this was a 2hr10min run.

in the area of the far right hand side of this page, she seemed to get caught up in an infinite loop. this is a closeup of the workout readout.

nelson is gabby’s escape-mate. i know this is not the only place they go when they disappear. i’ll be logging gabby’s daily workouts, so i can get a sense of where these criminals hang out.

I love this. But this is ST. We need HR, speed and total distance to truly judge athleticism. And elevation gain. Definitely elevation gain.

I’m betting there are some sweet scents in that infinite loop!

Or a dead squirrel
.

exactly! Sweet sweet scents…to a dog! Mine stuffs his face into my running shoes and inhales w/ all his strength for a sweet treat so I understand we have different ideas of pleasant aroma

Awesome.

what’s the mileage?

Agreed, this data needs to be uploaded to Training Peaks and its TSS calculated. Are they in a build right now?

Power output needed as well.

“what’s the mileage?”

mileage, it turns out, was pretty meager. less than 3 miles for the whole workout. heck, i could’ve done that on all fours. which is what she did

Looks like that pattern fits into the general accuracy limits of the GPS… could have been sitting still there as well. I’d check that spot for newspapers and old magazines (oh wait, it’s a she - nevermind).

awesome!

I find this fascinating! Will be great to see more data.

Sounds like the average STer’s IM marathon pace…

I agree, that looks like what I get when I forget to turn off the GPS function when I’m on the trainer. I think that was a nap.

so it was a point to point run i see…i hate those setups for spectating.

She could probably run faster if she had some compression socks
.

She also crossed several roads. Hate waiting at the darn stoplights. Wonder if she jogged in place or just sat there looking pissed…

Nice to see someone else is as crazy as I am. We are on 5 1/4 acres and have 4 chocolate labs. I have fenced it all in with 6’ no-climb deer fencing to keep deer out/dogs in. Our old male used to be able to climb the no-climb, but he prefers to sleep in the sun nowadays. However, his daughter likes to chase/sniff rabbits, and had found a way out of the fence. After several futile fence inspections (all looked good), I decided to rig up a 705 with a harness.

Using something called a Silverado Poo Pouch (usually holds doggy-bags, but perfectly fit the 705 in a bag) I tested it out on her while ball-fetching. Seemed to work well. Then I started leaving them alone outside for a couple of hours. Tracking worked well. She escaped 2 times while GPS’d, and both occurred within 3 meters of the main front powered gate. Once I let her back in through the south/front gate.

I finally persuaded her to show me her technique. By spring-loading the power gate she could stick her head through the gap far enough to force herself out - even with the extra metal deterrent I had added to the gate. Then she’d go next door and hang out with the neighbors dog.

Scared myself once. Let her out for a few hours at night with her brother, and she came back without the GPS/bag in her pouch. Found it lying on the ground by their doghouse (must have pulled it out while play-fighting). No damage at all, but I was thinking it would never be found in the forest. Learned to better strap things down in after that.
