a righteous man
.
With question, yes he is.
He’s the first President I really have memory of being in office.
Amazing life.
My favorite story about Carter:
The Navy’s work in developing the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus, meant that Rickover and Carter had access to the latest and greatest in top-secret nuclear energy technology. So when Canada’s Chalk River nuclear research facility experienced a power surge that damaged its reactor, the U.S. sent Carter and his team. He was one of a few people in the world who could do it.
Fuel rods at the research reactor experienced a partial meltdown after the power surge. It ruptured the reactor and flooded the facility’s basement with radioactive water, rendering the reactor core unusable.
In his 2015 autobiography, “A Full Life: Reflections At Ninety,” Carter described the incident and his preparations for repairing the reactor. They built an exact replica of the reactor, true to the last detail (except the actual nuclear material) on a nearby tennis court to practice and track their progress.
Carter and his 22 other team members were separated into teams of three and lowered into the reactor for 90-second intervals to clean the site. It was estimated that a minute-and-a-half was the maximum time humans could be exposed to the levels of radiation present in the area.
It was still too much, especially by today’s standards. The future president had radioactive urine for months after the cleanup.
“We were fairly well-instructed then on what nuclear power was, but for about six months after that, I had radioactivity in my urine,” Carter told CNN in 2008. “They let us get probably a thousand times more radiation than they would now. It was in the early stages, and they didn’t know.”

A Patriot, and an example for all mankind of a life worthy of emulation.
a Good Man and a good example. President Carter and Ms Rosalynn were also avid fly fishermen.

He always struck me as too decent a person to be a successful President. His imminent passing feels symbolic of the death of integrity and selflessness in public service.

Very well put. Such a sad paradox indeed.

an important point that’s easily lost.
of course, there are still good people at all levels of government, but his passing will definitely feel like the crossing of a threshold, or the end of an era.

Agreed. He wasn’t a good President for numerous reasons, many of which were out of his control, but he’s an amazing human being.
I’m trying to picture Trump being at the eventual state funeral for Carter, and having a difficult time. Man, that would be an awkward scene.
My favorite story about President Carter was his having to fend of an attack by a killer rabbit while he was fishing

it’s up there with Dukakis and his tank driving video in terms of portraying a presidential aspirant as weak. Which was unfortunate in Carter’s case as the situation was nothing like it was portrayed in the media. But humorous none the less

I voted for JC !
Met him a few times over the years, very gracious and humble man.
Wrong place at the wrong time
Wishing him Peace and Freedom
A lot of politicians could learn a lot from this statesman !

minor disagreement on wording. he ultimately wasn’t a successful president. i think his foreign policy - treaties he helped broker - were elite level. his administration was the first i can remember where the govt got involved with energy efficiency. believe it or not, he was a champion of deregulation.
he was a victim of skyrocketing interest rates, very long gas lines, and the iran hostages. i remember the rescue attempt gone awry. he might have been the right man in the right place at the very wrong time.
President Carter was brave enough to authorize launching Eagle Claw, the “rescue mission” against our hostages held by the Iranians in a era where we (USA) held a very nascent capability to bring such a endeavor to fruition. Today–yes we could probably pull it off. Back then, not really–it was a ‘forlorn hope’ but a noble endeavor nonetheless.
Mr Carter is not dead yet. I guess we’re honoring him in his final hours. I for one. Salute him. As a Man; as a Husband, as a Father; as a President; as a organizer of housing; as a fellow fly fisherman.
I wish i could have fished with him. I’ve fished with guides who fished with Mr Carter and Ms Rosylnn and by all accounts they were both very gracious and excellent fly fishermen.

Peanuts.
The most impressive woman I’ve ever known, my father’s mother, died after a sharp decline in the years immediately after I finished undergrad. I was completely unaware of her dying until she died and I still hold resentment in my heart toward my aunt for not letting me know. It’s hard to let go of. I’d have told her what she meant to me if given the opportunity.
It’s a gift to be able to express our gratitude and admiration while they’re among us. It just feels different.
He is not gone yet, however, if anyone ever lived a life to be emulated, it would be Jimmy Carter. May he rest in peace.
Some pictures from his moment in the sun.

Years ago, one of my patients in Virginia was a retired secret service agent who had worked under several US presidents. He had nothing but good words to say about President Carter. Said he was a kind and thoughtful man. I believe President Carter’s actions, after his time in office, even more confirmed his dedication to serving his fellow countryman. I hope whatever time he has left is one of peace and comfort
