Perhaps you can help me with this, in the Tier 1 category it just says an individual or relay olympic medal. Do you have to hit every category on that list to be Tier 1?
You only have to hit one of the criteria to achieve that tier of funding. However, these levels were updated at the end of 2024 and to be used for 2025 and beyond. Thus the 2024 Olympic MTR medals didn’t count for any of the four members of the team as the criteria was different last year ![]()
there was only 39 atheltes at the start list so in theory that is not a upgrade
to add its a rule that makes no sense.
You’re right. Bianca Seregni’s DNS dropped the number of starters below 40 ![]()
she would count as she was at the race briefing. but there was a few withdrawles during the week on tuesday the race had 42 females at the start list. and i guess on could argue that it was 42 …
anyway what matters is that it was a strong field at the top, potter tertch periault lombardi ,lehair so their rule makes not much sense to just be on quantity.
Who was missing from the top end of the field? I would argue that realistically there were 2-3 top athletes racing WTCS this year that were missing. Beaugrand and Waugh? Mansson since she is ranked top ten for WTCS this season.
Does the level of funding go down if your prize money goes above a certain level? I haven’t read the policy but I thought the funding just covered coaching, travel and healthcare if had decent race winnings. Think it was Gwen who said that but maybe the policy has changed for a home Olympics.
i would take off waugh and add eim who has had better performances at wtcs.
i think a 2nd place and a 5th.
iam almost sure waugh has no top 5 this year and only 1 race so far ?
anyway the rule is not very smartly written and realistically there is no easy wtcs podium. and using a field size of 40 has not impact on that given that there is really only 30 athletes that realistically have a chance to podium at wtcs level.
i can see why they do want to have a clause but the clause is not really thought out , given it really is about quality of field and not quantity.
No, it’s unlike the British criteria in that respect. I don’t believe there’s any earnings limit to receive funding.
does the uk still have that limit , i thought they got rid of that ?
Eim raced at Karlovy Vary but was DNF. Waugh recently placed 6th at Hamburg and 10th at Abu Dhabi at the beginning of the year.
Agree that 40 athletes feels like too high a bar for field size.
ups my bad anyway dns and dnf is part of the race
and jorgensen, ,lindeman and beaugrand i think were the only ones missing with a top 5 wtcs result this year.
Very happy to see Beth take a win. Not sure if the emotion was in part due to that or just the loss of her training partner
Thought Oliver Conway did really well
He did a lot of work in the bike ( always seemed to be at the front or thereabouts) thought he might fade on the run. Fourth in first WTS is really good.
Ok I know it was missing a few of the top people.
Still a great start for a 20(?) year old
Sam (the rider who was killed) is a good friend of Beth’s. He was Alistair’s, Jonnie’s and Beth’s long term bike mechanic as well. It has hit them hard so I think the emotion was just a pressure point relief. Jame’s and Lucy had to witness it and they are a tight training squad. Imagining that is just too raw.
I think Oli is 19/20 but not certain. He is an excellent prospect. Someone said this was only his 4th or 5th OD race, which just blows my mind. He is a sure starter for U23 WC when the squad is named Friday.
Yes tough that for them all.
Oliver seemed to be a solid all rounder, decent swim, really worked hard on the bike and good runner.
Not too long ago I thought the British mens team for LA would be Yee, Connor and Hugo. Bit more competitive now. Got to throw Ben in there too
And Hugo still needs to work on his bike
Ok so that makes sense for now. Another question, once you achieve the Tier 1 status, how long is it good for? A year from when you do it, calander year, shorter time frame? At any rate, it is only about $8k more a year for Spivey, an amount she can more than make in some super league or T100 race. Nice to have, but not nearly enough to bow to any regulations or rules they might want to put on you. Yes the olympic team is a carrot, but that is still well off into the future and not really a consideration at the moment for folks like her who are always highly ranked…
It’s supposed to start the next quarter, and then into the following calendar year.
Karlovy Vary is my new favourite course, hope this becomes permanent, brilliant to see Graff who put all that work in on the bike see it pay off with his first win.
While everyone was expecting a Dijkstra or a Milner to break through and be our next potential medal winning Brit male, my man Conway gatecrashes the party, this lad has huge potential!
Was great to see the three girls in the original FG all podium (minus Tertsch) shes already developed a reputation for not pulling her weight on the bike and it was great to see Potter doing her best Alistair Brownlee impression (until the camera cut away) on this subject, they had one job! Just how the hell did they miss Potter pass Spivey??
Potter was in absolute beast mode! She’s back in her 2023 form, no one was beating her in that race, just reading above I wonder if she was extra motivated due to the grieving, great to see Lehair get a decent result after the crash.
I remember saying here when they announced this year’s WTCS circuit that the Karlovy Vary upgrade from a World Cup was terrific news. Glad you’re not disappointed ![]()
The type of course you wish the Brownlees were still around for, its very pleasing on the eye also.
