ITU Age Group Rules

Does anyone have a link to the ITU rules governing Age Groupings?

I’m looking for an answer to this. I understand that your age on Dec 31/07 determines age grouping for the year 2007. But what if someone is racing in 2007 to qualify for the world championships in 2008. If they will be moving up to a new age group in 2008, can they qualify for their 2008 age group in 2007?

If you are from the US, seems like you need to ask USAT this question. I know it is very gray as to what this is.
The process on the web clearly states you qualify based on this year. But, it does not address age up like you are asking about.
So, did you have an issue?

Dave

No issue yet, I’m just looking at the entry list for the Canadian AG Championships and trying to assess whether to sign up. I’ll try checking with Triathlon Canada. Thanks.

I know this is always a though one. I thought in the past, one would race in an event and get a spot.
If one went the next year and aged up, they aged up.

But, only your federation knows how they will make up your team.

Either way, go for it. Would love to see you at Worlds in 08

Dave

Triathlon Canada already responded to my e-mail, clarifying that you stay in the Age Group you were in when you qualified. Impressively prompt response.

already been through it with USAT.
if your time was faster at portland than the 8th place finisher in the new age group…you have the spot

Wow, that makes it tough.

How did they figure all these possible age up stuff out? I sure see none of this on the web,
or heard about it or saw it in the results at nationals.

Dave

So, lets say you were 49 in 07, but 50 in 08, you would race in the 45-49 at 50 in 08?

Dave

had to ask usat at portland, also got it in writing from gina.

it’s pretty simple and also pretty easy…

you will race 50-54 in 08 worlds if your time was faster than the 8th place finisher in the 07 50-54 portland (around 2:17 i think). my problem was alot easier since the 60-64 group had steve smith and then a large group way back. hope these guys like hills vancouver is worse than portland.

one thing that may make it easier is if the roll down for vancouver 08 goes out to 16th at portland in the 50-54, then they (usat) may say your time only needs to be faster than 16th place…are u with me?

Triathlon Canada goes to the timing company and has then re-issue the results based on your Dec 31 age at the end of the year in which the World’s are held. Like Dec 31, 2008 for next year’s race. Spots are allocated based on the new ages. This may mean that you are presently two years younger than the age shown on the new set of results. We chatted about this method with the folks from Triathlon Canada at Osoyoos and it has happened that people have not got spots based on this new set of results.

That’s odd because we were told the exact opposite at Osoyoos. It was a Triathlon Canada representative from their Edmonton office doing the roll-down/sign-up for 2008 LC Worlds.

I guess this is only an issue for 08 since the qual races were in 07?
Confusing. So, one can knock forks out of older AG’s.

Oh well, I assume that is why the teams are 16-18 to handle any mistakes.

Wonder what the process for Worlds Short course 09 will be.

Wonder what the process for Long Course Worlds is for 08, if there is one?

WOW! You guys already have qualifying in place for 2008 LC worlds? I’ve seen nothing from USAT on that although I suspect that 2007 LC nationals may get some slots. Maybe I’ll move up to Canada, eh?

I copied your post and sent it to Triathlon Canada for clarification. They have responded that you are correct - their original response was incorrectly interpreted. So yes you are correct that for the 2008 Worlds the timing company will reissue the results based upon ages as of Dec 31, 2008.

I sent a note to Jeff at USAT earlier today asking about 08 LC worlds. He is at the Du race, so may take a few days to get a response.

portland 08 is qualifying race for canerrba (sp?), aus worlds 09

If this is short course the USAT site says six minimum from 08 nationals. Wonder what the process will
be for the other 10.

Dave

IMO USAT will have a hard time finding 6 let alone 16 people to go to australia for world’s in 09 because of:

  1. The way USAT screws travel up with fly by night agents
  2. The cost will be outrageous
  3. Race will be in the Australia summer or our winter (who’s ready to peak in december other than FL,AZ, So. CA athletes?)
  4. It will take a week to acclimate
  5. They drive on the wrong side of road

Maybe they will not limit to the 25 roll down like this year then.

The way I understand it is that they’ll have a second qualifying race in 2008, most likely somewhere in the eastern part of Canada. Well, not the REAL east, but Southern Ontario somewhere. I’m guessing that it gives the folks on either side of the country a chance at getting to the race without having to go all the way across the country.
