I used to be on both ST and TNO a lot. Then the whole adultery scandal happened and Big Brother came down with the 1984 attitude. I pretty much left then and hung out here exclusively. Lately I have visited TNO a bit and it seems that you’ll be lucky to have only a few new posts in any given hour. It is pretty painful to spend any time there now IMO.
Is TNO dying or fading away? Is it simply that everything has been discussed already. Is the mandate restricting fun and banter (my interpretation) stifling participation. Has everyone just come to ST?
I don’t particularly care, but I think it is interesting to watch the evolution/death of one of these types of cyber communities in the 21st century. I have participated in very few.
TNO always gets slow during the off season. And the ‘1984’ style restrictions have been eased, Hazen is much more easy going with his moderating now. I’m sure they will be fine.
Never been there, but the “affair” was something about one of the posters had an affair with another poster, then the guy’s wife posted about it, calling them out or something.
The adultery scandal is well documented in ST threads (but all TNO threads have been disappeaered). As I understand it: Some member’s wife got on the forum to out his affair with another member. Turns out that was not the only affair he was having. I think that was the gist. I was on vacation and everything was deleted before I read it. And then you were prohibited from talking about the whole thing or threads were deleted.
I’ve lurked there once in awhile and made no more than about a half dozen posts a few years ago under a different handle. Some guy once posted a pyramid scam on TNO as “cerveloguy”, but that was not me.
Some people post on both ST and TNO, but there is also an “us vs. them” feeling on both sides as both forums have their own regulars. I waste too much time already on this forum so don’t need to get involved with another as well.
The funny thing about “the affair” was that the guy was born again recently. Also TNO is geared towards the newbie sometimes but they did just spank ST at the last Ironman and nobody talked about it, i was pleasantlty surprised by the results.
I always like it when some married guys girlfriend gets mad cause she is not the only girlfriend that the married guy has…HELLO!!! He is MARRIED and CHEATING on his WIFE…why would a woman think he would not cheat on two women, or three…er…where do I sign up?
If you hadn’t noticed the tri offseason is here for many people so the TNO forums are quite as active.
ST is more of a cycling enthusiasts forum with some dabbling in running and swimming and therefore stays more active at this time of year as a huge number of bike porn threads (NEW '06 MODELS!!! OMFG IS THAT FASTER!!!) keep people smiling.
It is being killed by www.beginnertriathlete.com . TNO has not done much with new content in a while and it is hurting them. Beginner Triathlete seems to be more active now and they regularly update content.

Last year, my long time friend who owns one of the local bike shops recently found himself in divorice proceedings as a result of his now ex-wife’s extra-marital activities with her running partner. When we first heard the whole story, my wife who is an attorney and has had some experience in ‘family law’ matters over the years, casually remarked that if a person is willing to cheat with you, then that same person will not be averse to cheating on you!

I seriously doubt it; as best as I can tell, the only “banned” people nowadays are those who decided on their own to remain in exile after the Great Purge was lifted. Could you have some technical problem instead?

If anything, I find response time to be better there than on ST, although there are occasional exceptional periods.
Personally, I don’t see any evidence that TNO is dying. Anyone who thinks the fun and banter is gone obviously hasn’t looked at the OT Crossfire forum there during the last 24 hours or so. A couple of the threads yesterday and today have been very lively, offbeat and hilarious–which is not to say that people don’t offer serious observations too.
