I was on the bike course at Mile 25: the start of the long climb, riders on the right. They were letting a few cars, bikes and cyclists up from Pont du Loup on the left side of the road which will not have interfered nor given benefit to athletes. Elsewhere I know not. I suggest that the odd clip of cars is isolated: remember it’s 180km into remote areas of the Alpes-Maritimes. ProTriNews mentioned two instances with Bleymehl getting some obstruction and Sodaro riding up behind a car and having to filter through, a few seconds lost. This is France: sometimes the locals lack discipline and it’s massively difficult to manage/police. Adverse effect on racing: negligible.
From a friend that was on the course. ‘I had cars on the course. They doubled me and I had to slow down because I was behind a car’.
For an IM WC that you pay exorbitant amount of money to race and IM is pumping it to replace Kona every other year, well that situation is just fuel for us who think that Nice is no substitute for Kona.
Sure in Kona you can have the odd ‘rebellious driver’ try to get through the police or volunteer control to get onto the road but Kona is much more controlable than Nice.
Nice has an infinite number of places where cars could come onto the course and IM can’t block or put a volunteer on every one of them.
For a one off race, ok s*** happens but this is not the situation for a WC.
P.S. Yes I am a detractor of alternating the WC from Kona.
Pat Griskus 1987 pre kona.
Credit to Boston Marathon RD Dave McGillvray, generous with his time, made a point to call me and explained details i didn’t know. They were riding together pre race, Dave veered off to head back, Pat kept riding. Cement truck with an improperly secured boom let loose on the same corner, and got Pat in the back of the head, done. So yes, it has happened, and there have been others too, names i cannot recall.

The crashes in Kona before and during the race are well documented.
But do you have any data on crashes in Nice to say Kona has more?
Rachel Zilinskas crashed and broke her collarbone during the race this past weekend. I think I saw at least one other pro mentjoned that crashed but can’t remember who.
I think the discussion was crashes due to cars. Rachel’s crash was aparently her own doing not clipping into her shoes from what I head and then losing contact with foot on top of shoe after hitting a bump
Cars involved or no cars involved, we’ve only only had 2 IMWC in Nice. Not a lot of data points compared to Kona. And I highly doubt anyone on this forum has any data for past IM Nice races.
I think comparing the two races on this particular topic is silly.
I did nice worlds 2019 , safest course I ever rode didn’t even have two way bike traffic .
So the comment about the safety is stupid .
The post used a few seconds of a 8 hour , 1000 racers to draw a conclusion so I was seeing if he had more evidence. He didn’t .
Kona has much worse traffic before the race too .
Nice pre race rides I was shocked how respectful the drivers were I had to wave them by as I wasn’t used to climbing with a car driving behind me being patient for safety reasons.
Am i seeing stuff, or is this person running a Garmin Vector on the left crank, and a Look Keo Blade on the right? Could it be because of aero-gains from the Look’s? Never seen someone run mixed pedals…
Just watched LCB’s video on why she didn’t race Nice. Can’t help but look at her shoes as a potential reason for her consistent lower leg injury. She’s an ASICS sponsored athlete. Their carbon plated race shoes offer a 5mm drop. Wonder if the lower drop is causing more stress on her lower legs than her body can’t handle. Wonder if running in another brand that offers more heel drop would help mitigate any potential issues that have lead to her calf problems the last few years?
