Do pro triathletes train in their carbon plate racing shoes all the time? I would have thought she would have an entire lineup of training shoes from them with varying drops. At an age group level, I’ve always advocated that people have 4 shoes of different ages and configurations in the rotation on a weekly basis (maybe two identical shoes of different age and two others that are different). The same thing everyday means any problems you have that are stressed by a given model are stressed the same way daily. The different shoe just subtley changes the load. Roughly reason as mixing up between road bike and tri bike and spin bike, or mixing up strokes in the water
I’ve seen in other videos she trains in shoes with a higher drop. I’m just curious if she did her shake out run in her race shoes and with the lower drop, that’s when the calf got angry and had the issue. Just wondering if a carbon plate with 8-10mm of drop would have protected her calf from the issue? Again, so many moving pieces to it, but as someone who struggles with calf tightness, I can’t run in anything sub 8mm of drop or my soleus screams at me.
Why would she? She has a full time Army Captain Salary and gets to race full time. What’s not to love? I wonder if BATF has a minimum race number she has to attempt to not be recalled to regular duty.
Not to teach everyone how to run and the fact a higher heel puts less stress on your calf and tendon.
But Sam laidlow and Jan use hokas and has the same lower leg issues ?
People with different shoes have the same injury and people with the same shoes have different injuries, shoes play basically no role unless they are not your shoes ( size , fit)
Asics recently released her mermaid edition Superblast 2 which is non-plated, has 8mm drop, and a super bouncy foam. The superblasts are Asics’ do-it-all trainer so bulk of her mileage are probably from that. Her lower limb injuries are still most likely from her running mechanics. She’s done a video before on how Red Bull and Asics have been helping her to address theses issues.
@devashish_paul: “Chelsea, just doing an entire season of racing around the world”
Well not really. She had two months training (with some non-competitive racing and validation of AQ slot) in NZ, Otherwise she’d managed to finish ONE race and DNFd another: that’s all.
Good review by Tim Heming with Greg Bennett:
Gives Sodaro’s travail pre-race as a fractured patella in August, limiting any running training.
