Be glad the race isn’t taking place in Germany, or Laura would’ve been DQed one minute before the finish for handing the little German flag back to one of the fans (outside assistance!)
Seriously, I’m so happy for her. Was rooting for Matthews, but to Philipp I have just one quote from The Wire to make: “you earned that buck like a motherfucker, you keep that shit”.
Don’t get why the commentators are apparently sad for Matthews. She left T2 with Philipp. Philipp ran a 2:45. Matthews has never run sub 2:49. It would’ve been a big ask anyway. She may have felt terrible in the second half of the run but it almost surely had no impact on her final place, which is insanely good.
2:44 is a smoking fast marathon off a hard bike course. With Matthews almost 8 minutes down and Sodaro 20 min back, Phillip was literrally in a different zip code.
Seems likely Philipp would have won even with Haug and LCB on their best day. Kind of disappointed with how little discussion of the pro series there was on the broadcast. I would have enjoyed some live projections of the implications for the standings given the gaps on course, specifically wondering how far Hering and Lewis will fall.
ETA: they just posted the standings. Herring still in the lead, but Mathew’s really in the drivers seat with still one zero for 70.3. Several others lower in the standings with zero scores that could maybe factor at the top once they fill out their schedule.
To borrow a Sodaro catch phrase: “Curious”. It would seem that the top 2 are even more fit than their unbeatable performances revealed. They bested all competitors including Sodaro riding on Canyons - in the hills! - despite it being such a tank . With all 3 at similar heights and all top runners, the demand characteristics are likely in the same ballpark.
I’m genuinely happy for all of the top 3 (and top 5: Pierre and Bartlett! and top 10! Hering, Slater!) I’m just offering electrolytes ( ) and a counterpoint to the “anti-Canyon” sentiment that cropped up here and by Sodaro. To each their own. May these pros continue to break barriers and deepen the field, and may sponsors continue to innovate and diversify their products to the benefit of the sport.
Fully deserved win by Laura. She and Laidlow showing what you can do when you peak for a single race in modern racing.
Amazing battle from Kat and I think her time will come. She’ll probably have to do a bit less racing to make it happen though.
Very happy to see Chelsea on the podium. Her public persona doesn’t resonate with me, but I’m sure she’s a lovely woman and amazing mom. After all the ups and downs i’m happy to see her deliver on the biggest stage.
It included today’s result. The gap between Kat and Jackie was quite narrow, Kat will easily pass her if she finishes Taupo, just a question of whether anyone else who also has zero scores could displace Hering further.
Thanks for typing those into the thread. Watching the replay just now, Kat’s significant walking and yet she runs 2:53 is pretty awesome. I would imagine being a heavier athlete than Phillipp she would have burned through a lot more calories on that bike course too. Sodaro’s stride length looked subsantially shorter than when she “runs well” yet she still ran 2:54. I realize there are no hills on that run course and temps were nice for running.
For Chelsea, just doing an entire season of racing around the world, managing parenting duties makes the achievement outstanding. It would be one thing if you could just show up for the single day of the worlds, but all the travel has to make it tough. I think that deserves a big Chapeau (also to her partner)
Are we going to discuss the time gaps at the World Championship in Nice? Also is it might be me but opposite to the article calling Nice success from the outside personally I only remembered on Saturday that there was world champs on Sunday, may be a Europe thing but before Kona my social feeds are full of the race

Do the time gaps suggest a big lack of depth?
[/quote]
the differecne from 3rd to 20th female
is pretty similar than from 1st to 20 male last year in nice
so yes of course there is slightly less depth in the females since there is less female pros but i would say this is not what the results suggests
what it suggests is that if you have a real bike course where you cant just ride in a pace line the time gaps increase in the bike …
