They are calling Trump/Bolton/Pompeo’s bluff… let’s see how this goes

“Iran made a very big mistake!”

That sounds like how I excoriate my daughter when she comes home too late from a party… it never seems to work.

I don’t think Iran is thinking this thru very well. With Bolton in his ear, Trump is subject to nuke them and be done with it.

** **That sounds like a line in the sand.

American men and women I am afraid are going to die along with some good Iranian people which aren’t nuts like their leaders.

I think Trump has a yuge boner to send some troops off to Iran to die.

  • Maybe he means in thinking the drone was within their borders… Probably not, and I doubt it was, as they are claiming, rather that it was just another escalation in response to Trump’s moves that are harming their ability to generate income.

My suspicion as well. There’s no logical explanation for why the Air Force would fly said drone, which has no countermeasures and is not stealth, into Iran’s air space.

Whose leaders are nuts? Just want to clarify.

This was the naval version of the USAF’s Global Hawk. It does persistent (long duration) wide area ISR over maritime areas and has some capabilities a normal GH does not. The Navy would have been flying it. They have the RCS of a metal clad barn. When we fly near borders we always fly with a buffer zone to ensure there’s no mistaking whose airspace we are in. The Russians fucked with some our shit electronically in another area a few years ago and we’ve done various things recently that have proven very effective at mitigating that shenanigans. Not going to say more on the matter

IRGS knew exactly what the asset was; exactly where it was and shot it down anyways. Since it was unmanned there was no loss of life and we just lost an expensive piece of tech. Iranians have nothing comparable. So now if we go after say some of their POS gunboats or missile batteries there will be loss of life (theirs) and they will howl. It’s a blatant attempt to goad us into acting so Iran can cry foul and try to get the EU, China and Japan to act as intermediaries and get us to lift sanctions–which are hurting them.

I think this is a pretty good analysis. The best thing Trump could do right now is to act like the cooler head and refrain from any military action. The more Iran lashes out, the more they put themselves in the corner. My fear is that some of the hawks in the admin are going to try to use this to go far beyond what would be a proportional response.

The part that is disturbing is both sides appear to be in the mode of goading the other into doing something stupid. And there also appears to be plenty of stupid to go around.

Iran may very well ‘deserve’ to be invaded, just like Iraq was. And just like Iraq, them deserving it doesn’t make it a good idea for us to do it.

I think Trump’s response will be to send more assets to the region. That takes time to implement, giving the US some time to build support for the use of land bases in gulf states in the region to potentially be used for any attacks.

It was actually not naval version, the MQ-4C, it was a modified block 10 MQ-4A, basically the earliest Global Hawks that the USAF didn’t want anymore that the Navy modified.

If the Navy actually turned off the transponder, that was really stupid on their part. The USAF MQ-4s keep their transponders on, in order to say, “Hey, I am not doing anything sneaky, here I am!” Flying without your transponder on and at the very least going right up to their airspace is just asking for trouble.

Yeah baby. We’ve been waiting for this day since January 20, 1981. Rumor has it Trump is going to dig up Reagan’s body and let his skeleton push the launch button.

I’m sure the navy knew which side of the line they were on. But I wouldn’t put it beyond belief that they would cross those lines. US Navy has been known to, for example, sail a warship into Iranian territorial waters and then shoot down a civilian passenger plane killing 270+ people on board “for no logical reason” in the past, and then deny the crap out of it. Iran probably figures they still have some payback credit due. What would be the equivalent toll in unmanned military drones?
