I’m never a big conspiracy theory guy. Usually the claimed plots involve so many people that it would be impossible to keep secret. But if I had to peg one guy to be at the heart of a plot to start a war, Bolton would be the guy. He is our Little Finger.
I’m sure the navy knew which side of the line they were on. But I wouldn’t put it beyond belief that they would cross those lines. US Navy has been known to, for example, sail a warship into Iranian territorial waters and then shoot down a civilian passenger plane killing 270+ people on board “for no logical reason” in the past, and then deny the crap out of it. Iran probably figures they still have some payback credit due. What would be the equivalent toll in unmanned military drones?

Iran may very well ‘deserve’ to be invaded, just like Iraq was. And just like Iraq, them deserving it doesn’t make it a good idea for us to do it.

Why did Iraq deserve to be invaded?
You can only declare that you are at war with the US, wish death on the US, want to destroy the US so many times before we are allowed to take you up on the offer. Along with a laundry list of human rights violations (and yes I know we prop up and support a lot of regimes with much worse violations, but that doesn’t change what was happening in Iraq)
That doesn’t mean it was a good idea, it doesn’t relieve us of responsibility for what happened, doesn’t mean we didn’t make many mistakes before during and after, etc. It is sort of like saying that a small kid who is constantly taunting the big kid got what he deserved when he gets punched. That’s a silly rationale. North Korea has been doing that for like 40 years.
Like Iraq, it’s mostly internal propaganda. Leaders need an enemy to galvanize support.
War should be started only because of a clear and present danger to U.S. interests or people. Bluster isn’t a clear and present danger.

Doesn’t this frighten you? That’s straight crazy talk. It’s not the least bit hard to believe. It’s extraordinarily easy to believe. Trump’s connection to reality is vague and inconsistent. And that’s sort of frightening to me. That’s not sarcasm or trolling as far as I can tell. He’s just totally out to lunch. There’s nothing there. Nobody’s home. He doesn’t recognize the almost completely transparent tactics being used by Iran here. I could live with the war-mongering McCain.
