IM Chattanooga Swim

Weather forecast calling for heavy rain thru Friday. It’s been a hot dry Summer here in the Chattanooga area so the rains are needed but it may very well affect the swim. It may very well be canceled if the river flows like it normally does with heavy periods of rain. Good luck to all the racers!

Crap that would really suck if it gets cancelled. I have the son of one of my best friends doing his first Ironman, and I think he will be pissed if he ends up doing an IronDu

I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing gets canned - trees with dry roots like to fall across roads. I suspect cleanup and road safety will be the biggest issue. Chattanooga is in the storm’s crosshairs and it’s also looks to be looping back through on race day.

They moved the bike to highway 27. There are no trees on that highway. I think they can cleanup on Sat when the hurricane is over.

I don’t think it’s ethical to hold the race if resources are needed for storm cleanup. Ironman is in a tough spot. The storm is tracking to do a circle around Chattanooga possibly hitting it twice.

Oh wow, that truly sucks. Maybe people will get offered a deferral to next year or Panama City of Arizona later this year.

Swim has been canceled. I hate it for the racers.

Yeah. Super lame. Not gonna get my hopes up that they wont cancel the rest of it depending on what the storm does.

I wonder what the stats are for triathlons with cancelled swims. Do athletes end up over biking in these events without the extra fatigue from the swim?

I can tell you one stat, there will be a couple 1000 folks posting on FB and other socials that they just did a new PR for their Ironman race, without any caveats too!!! And how many prayers not that they have been answered, are going to a half bike and 10 mile run, PR’s and records for everyone!!

I did IM 70.3 Penticton with the cancelled swim due to lake temp turnover. My bike was quite a bit slower than when I have a swim first. The swim gets my heart rate and cardio going and when I hit the bike I am ready to roll. With no swim, I ended up taking 30 min to get going, but because I knew I was not that late into racing, I went lower on nutrition which bit me on the run

Lionel is taking a concord out of retirement to fly over and double up after the Penticton IMC duathlon sub 7 performance. It should be an easy training day now!!!

You joke, but it’s exactly what Sam Long has done. These duathletes getting their Nice ticket stamped early!

It seems they removed the cancelation notice from the Ironman tracker app. I wonder what that means

Probably doesn’t mean anything. They won’t uncancel the swim, and the notice is still up on their socials in any case. This whole thing reminds me of the year the NYC marathon was canceled because of the hurricane … everyone insisted the race was going to happen because the storm would be passed, which it was, so all the participants traveled to the race, only to have it canceled because cleanup efforts were too big and took priority.

We’re pretty gutted, being our home race for Quintana Roo. Expo has been carved down as well today; it’s a bit of a lake alongside the river.

That said, for those in town: the Quintana Roo factory has been doing Factory Tours all day today. We also have has an Open House (iwith free food from a taco truck from 4-6pm). We also have a team of mechanics that can do our free customary pre-race safety and gear adjustment checks (and today, we’lll do them on ALL bikes, not just QR models!)

We’ also have Haley Chura in today during the Open House, where we expect to have her doing a 30-minute autograph signing.

All of tihs is to say, YOU’RE INVITED to come down today, get out of the rain, tour our facility to see how the magic is made, enjoy some food and drink on us, while we wait for this weather to pass over. We’re just four miles from expo, at 4126 S Creek Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37406. If you’re in town, come through and hang out!
