Can we just stop with the hyperbolic, guilt slinging.
Is this shit reprehensible and should it be addressed/stopped? Yes! A resounding “fuck yes!”
But don’t lump the fans in with the people committing the atrocities.
Fans of the game aren’t facilitating or supporting the monsters committing the crimes. Fans are still supporting the players. The players need support and fans.
Watching games and cheering for the buckeyes athletes doesn’t equate to “helping the true monsters” that commit crimes against the athletes.
Cmon man, you’re smart and I know there’s a better way for you to get your messages across without blaming the ones who shouldn’t be blamed.
The scarier part of this is how many colleges it has happened at. It is a very long list and the script almost always goes the same way.
I think a lot of it comes back to regular people being naive and not comprehending how bad people think and act. Especially when the bad actor is in a professional position and/or successful.
Yea the reality is that with countless colleges and organizations and facilities in the country (then world) the chances of scumbags being scumbags stays the same and incidence goes up.
Sports, to law firms, to medical practices, to schools, to factories, to summer camps, to churches, to non-profits…assault/sexual assault will happen.
Whether people are aware of it or not, it’s not the fault of the average person. It’s not the fault of Joe Smith in New Hampshire who likes to support the Buckeyes.
It’s the fault of all those on the inside who know/knew and responsibility of those in a position to power to do something.
It’s not some random fan who is “supporting the monster” simply by watching the game. We are not complicity simply by continuing to support the players and game.
It’s a package deal: you can’t turn on the television and “only” watch the players without supporting the school or name. It’s not physically possible to separate the two. And if your or DSW’s solution is “don’t watch the games” then you’re doing even more to hurt the players and athletics and more student athletes not just the ones being assaulted. And by doing so you’re also not affecting the outcome of whether these athletes were assaulted.
It takes some mental gymnastics to make a post saying that if you are a fan of this sport then you are "helping the monsters that work in the program who sexually assault and take advantage the student athletes.
I think I get what he is trying to convey I just don’t like the almost guaranteed hyperbole and misplaced guilt that follow when he presents legitimate issues.
Being complicit means being “involved.” Again the mental gymnastics required to say all of us American taxpayers are complicit in worldwide atrocities are impressive. So what about those non-tax payers who support the regime? See where there are issues with the logic?
One could argue that we are forced to pay taxes and have no say in where the dollars and cents go.
I pay rent to a landlord. If he uses his wealth to take advantage of other people am I complicit in his scheme because he used money from my rent to take advantage of his victims?
The story is out. You linked a documentary. So now it’s time for things to be done and actions to be taken by those who can. Let people continue to watch without accusing them of “helping” the monsters who actually commit the crimes.
This line of discussion doesn’t lead anywhere. Everyone is connected to everything in some tangential way. You can make a “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” style connection to anything, based on what you buy or don’t buy, consume or don’t, vote for or don’t vote for, etc. It becomes meaningless, and just another way for people to stir the pot.
If you go by DSW’s logic, then countries providing aid to Gaza are responsible for Hamas since we all know the aid is going to be stolen or sold by Hamas rather than go to the people of Gaza.
And don’t get me started on support of climate change and that adopting things like solar panels is really just supporting China which is murdering the Uyghurs.
I think I’ll choose to only focus on me and not help or support anyone going forward…
Michigan fans did that too. Then their story broke. Turns out a lot of creepy doctors figure out how to work at universities. Or more accurately, abusers find out how to access their chosen victims.
The argument against the NFL (or any football for that matter) and CTE is a lot better one. The actual thing you are watching is doing the harm we are talking about. For me, it has made it harder to enjoy football as much as I used to. Big hits now make me squirm.
Indiana just had something drop recently, which means that as of now, 6 out of 7 former Big Ten East schools have had a very bad abuse scandal, with Rutgers being the outlier.
Or, more precisely, tons of enablers at many institutions, churches, universities, and so on look the other way and even assist these predators. And, sure, generally, predators are everywhere, but they would quickly be shut down if cowardly enablers did not assist predators at every bloody step.
I think a lot of those people are enablers by self-delusion. It doesn’t absolve them, but it helps explain them. They convince themselves that this person is successful so would have no reason to do it, they have money so why would they do it, I’ve known them for years and they are my friend no way they could do it.
I had a very good friend all through school. Her brother got convicted of raping 3 girls and served a pretty decent jail term. All the stories were consistent and clearly rape. She was certain that all of them were just misunderstandings and that he hadn’t really done anything. She wasn’t someone who was going to aid and abet rape, but she was ready to defend her brother vociferously.
I don’t think Paterno believed that Sandusky was raping and molesting boys. Any objective observer would say he had to know and that he was complicit. He definitely failed his responsibility to follow up and deserves to have a horrific reputation and if he were still alive to be suffering punishment. But I think he had convinced himself that none of it was true and he wasn’t going to ruin his longtime friend over misunderstandings.
Call me crazy, but to me that’s not mental gymnastics, that just obvious fact. We pay for it = we are absolutely complicit.
But more on topic, what are your thoughts about the NFL, the college football system, football watching (TV and/or in person) and the devastating effects of CTE?
Actively rooting against OSU is tantamount to support for Michigan, which makes you complicit in their shenanigans, and therefore knocked off your moral high ground.
Bottom line, there is no moral high ground. We’re all wallowing around in the muck.
