Fake is an unhelpful term in this context. It’s like saying the cadence of a preacher is fake. It’s not how they talk at the dinner table, but it’s clearly an established way of communicating in some contexts, and doing so in that context isn’t fakery—unlike with Iggy Azalea, who adopted the affect to sound inner city. If you or I recorded a reggae album and affected a Kingston accent, that’d be fake. If you or I walked up to a pulpit not being preachers and did our best MLK Jr impersonation, that’d be fake. But a preacher talking in the cadence of a preacher, not fake. Kamala speaking to other black Americans in that manner, not fake.
Being part of the culture is the key to authenticity. Kamala is, Azalea was not. Hillary was not.
Stretching the analogy there… It’s fake and it’s cringe. I know people realise politicians are fake, but accepting and defending them talking differently to you is really taking the cake. Be genuine, be consistent, be you… Crazy concept. The bar has been set low.
What part is the objectionable fake accent part? I have not seen all of it, but quite a few highlights. So we can criticize her correctly, so we have a clip or timestamp that illustrates the fake accent?
I’m not going to just accept it happened. I needs the pics.
To save lastlap time here is the full speech. I am not hearing this alleged fake black accent that he claims to have heard. She sounds just like she always sounds.
Vice President Kamala Harris holds campaign rally in Atlanta | Full speech (youtube.com)
The leader of the GOP spewed racist gibberish and lies to a room full of journalists today and this triggers the usual folks launch a deflection campaign. Bizarre.
It wasn’t lastlap. It was Jimatbeyond
Harris isnt really black that she is Indian WHO BECAME BLACK.
How exactly does this happen?
I am sure to the general public it is confusing. We live in a world were identities can be worn lightly and put on and taken off easily. So the idea that somebody who is biracial can identify in a variety of ways has quite a bit of traction.
Her concise response at a rally in Texas today:
“America deserves a leader who understands our differences do not divide us, they are an essential source of our strengthâ€
I don’t feel attacked, belittled, or threatened by that. Just saying.
he also said there was an illegal immigrant invasion, and they were taking black jobs. He was asked what is a black job, and trump responded as any job is a black job.
Both times the audience laughed at him.
In TFG’s little mind they were laughing with him. Much as the time he spoke at the UN and they laughed at him.
Maybe unlike you guys Trump think black jobs ARE all jobs, not just barbers, nails and McDonald’s?
Again reading through this thread the pure level of hatred is palpable, republicans are dumb, nasty, stupid etc… The hate is strong.
Maybe he does think that all jobs are black jobs. Like most concepts though he does not help himself by explaining that nuance. Hence, the maybe is left to hang. The level of hatred you perceive is directed not to the flock but rather to its elected shepherd.
The level of hatred you perceive is directed not to the flock but rather to its elected shepherd.
Except reality doesn’t reflect this. Here is just a handful of comments directed at ‘the flock’ in this thread alone…
His supporters are a combination of nasty and dumb
And the louder that roar gets, the more **deplorables **seem to join in on the chorus.
How dumb does he think people are?
Several of them on this very board even as we speak.
Tyler is lining up in the dumb line.
I’ll tell you what; you put those racist bastards in the electric chair.
…he also said there was an illegal immigrant invasion, and they were taking black jobs. He was asked what is a black job, and trump responded as any job is a black job.
.
The follow up question should’ve been, “So, Mr Trump, you are saying the presidency of the US is a black job?”
Jobs aren’t taken they are given. Why are American business owners firing Americans and hiring illegals (if they are, not convinced this is real at all BTW). That needs to be shouted from rooftops.
Also if someone poor and desperate who just walked across a desert with not much more than the clothes on their back is a threat to your job maybe up your jobs skill? Just saying.

How exactly does this happen?
He may be suggesting that she identified primarily by her Indian ethnicity through her mom, until it became politically expedient for her to identify more as a black woman, and that at some point she started presenting herself more in that light.
(not endorsing this line of thought, just trying to frame it in terms that might make sense)
She went to Howard University. She was in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. If she “chose” to be black she did it as a teenager.
I’ve always felt it was weird when people feel the need to pigeon hole a person into a given race when they have a mixed race background (e.g. Tiger Woods). I guess it would make some sense if a person was raised in a culture primarily of one race vs. another.
It’s also ironic that cultural conservatives now have a problem with a person with some black background identifying as black when historically they were forced into that racial identity.
Anyone wondering why reasonable people question the intelligence of Trump supporters just needs to take a few minutes and watch his performance yesterday. What sane person watches this and says “Yeah, that guy should be President”?
It’s also ironic that cultural conservatives now have a problem with a person with some black background identifying as black when historically they were forced into that racial identity.
I can only guess that his thought process yesterday was to try to paint her as “not black” in hopes that the black people he was speaking to would agree and turn on her.
He likely thinks that they only like her for being black and if she’s “not black” they won’t like her.

That would be my guess as well.

I think there is far more to it than what ethnicity she presents as… the question was do you agree that she is a DEI hire… the answer went down a very different rabbit hole. Regardless if she identifies as one ethnic group or another is irrelevant in light of the question. The person asking the question was getting at that many Republicans were referring to Harris as a DEI hire, and the fair question was do you agree that is acceptable language to use?.. then he obfuscates with define DEI, when he knows full well what DEI refers to, then when that does not work he runs off on is she Black or is she Indian… So the situation is not just the small part but the full context. He dug a hole then kept digging! Clearly the interviewer does not think that he is well aligned with the black community but she did say let’s address the elephant in the room, a lot of people do not think it is appropriate you to be here today. She then went on to explain why that was. He had a chance to defend himself had he wished to but the statements she made were all true and very pointed. He walked into a chainsaw and the results were a blood bath.
“He walked into a chainsaw and the results were a blood bath.â€
He walked into an opportunity to tamp down some of the worst characterizations and accusations against him and the result was a temper tantrum that only reinforced the truth behind them.
That’s entirely on him. Any reasonable and capable politician could have managed that situation. He is what he is.
****She delivered some lines with sass and black people cheered. Let’s just be honest about what we’re talking about here. It makes some white people uncomfortable.
Trump is trading into cultural zeitgeist that animates both the left and the right. In terms of identity politics the left uses that a lot and Trump uses it appealing to a group that now identifies as white and nationalistic. And painting Harris as not authentic well one of the worst things a modern person can do is not be authentic. How many times have your heard people say things like, "I am much happier now that I am living as my “authentic self”.

One can advance the argument that identity politics has disempowered the left and fueled the rise of white nationalism.

Not directed at you but one could argue that people that advance that argument are idiots.

You are giving Trump far too much credit. He was doing nothing of the sort. He’s not smart enough to do that.
He was trying to push the narrative that she isnt black. She’s not like you. You shouldn’t like her.
That’s as much as his brain can process.

White Nationalism has always been around, what’s different now is Trump and some of his followers cozy up to them (or are them). He’s basically empowered them.
