Hooked rear disc wheel

I have never used them but I really appreciate the quality of the info they publish. I asked questions, got solid answers.
They just come across as a no BS company. We need more of that.

Did they give a reason as to why there’s a 72PSI/5 Bar limit on the wheels for 28mm+ tires?
The Vanquish are solid wheels and was looking at those for an upcoming TT build but coming in at a 190 fighting weight, 72PSI isn’t for me on the road.

I asked them this exact question (I’m 210 flight weight) and I could never get a clear answer. This is what they said when I specifically asked “Can your wheels handle my weight and be optimized for RR?”

Not exactly a straight forward answer :person_shrugging:

The wider and shorter tire contact patch has less rolling resistance compared to the longer contact patch on a 28mm tire mounted on a narrow rim. The increased tire volume and wider contact patch also offers more comfort by absorbing cracks and bumps in the road. This leads to a stark difference in ride feel compared to narrow rims with tires pumped up until they feel like concrete.

All this being said - I train at 67-70 PSI on other wheels and I don’t really have a problem or notice a detriment to speed. I do notice the ride is a lot more comfortable.

I didn’t ask, just going by what is on the website. I typically ride right around that PSI anyway…

This is part of my frustration, you pulled 72 psi max off their website under the vanquish pro series, I pulled 70 max psi from the chart on the disc wheel page and the attached photo from the sticker on my wheel indicates 67 psi max (all for 28mm tires).

Is that an older model? Doesn’t say pro on it?
Give or take a few PSI, does it really matter?

Their disc uses the V62 rim, and to my knowledge the only difference between the Pro and non-Pro are the spokes and hubs, not the actual carbon rim. So in terms of PSI the recommendations would be the same for both models. I run 60-65 PSI and honestly never even noticed those limits were so low for a hooked wheel!

I just got on chat on their website, the person said "sorry for the confusion. The website was recently updated to the correct 72psi max "

I double checked my receipt when this thread started. Its the Vanquish Pro, purchased May 2024. If you zoom in on the stickers on the website they match my sticker.

They only offer the Pro for a disc brake disc wheel.

Correct but I guess my point was that all Pro and non-Pro wheels share the same rims.

I’d like to run a 25 or 26 front and 28 rear around 80ish during a race.

I wonder if HED just states 72 psi limit as an attempt to educate and force people who are riding 100-110 psi to run lower. The actual structural or safety limit may actually be higher.

Running 70-72 psi on their wheels is fine for majority of triathletes. But for those who are looking for every last marginal gain, it can be limiting for smooth roads.

I think this is theoretically possible. However, by definitively limiting maximum pressure on their wheels they are losing some sales and also are raising questions about the structural integrity of their wheels compared to other hooked competitors who have no such limits. So this might be quite expensive education. They could just write we do not recommend running our wheels at pressure higher than X, however the max is Y.

It speaking with HED over the last couple of days… It seems as if they simply don’t trust the tire industry with their 22.5 Inner width rims. So they stick to 72 psi as what they tell people…

Which is super odd as even Reserve wheels that have a 24mm inner rim and they clam 100 psi as their max.

Just different decisions on marketing, and what risk they are comfy with? During our video call with them when Anne was describing some of their tech, she mentioned that all their rims are hooked ‘because Anne needs to sleep at night’…

Hooked is a wise choice on their part. It doesn’t explain why they have a pressure limitation similar to hookless though. 80psi on hooked rims has never been a risk factor.
