Feel like this validates my HED Vanquish wheelset/disc purchase, but I’d be curious how many other manufacturers have caught up to HED in 2025.
Over 180km and moving my head around looking at random things on the course.
2/3 watts is so so so so so fine.
Been using the Vanquish Pro for about 3 years.
Tubeless setup
Hubs spins forever
Wish valve stem opening was a bit large.
Solid wheel
Use a dremel to make the opening a little larger. Seriously, I’ve done it to two Hed and one Zipp disc.
Bought the silca hiro once, expensive but I’ve used it so many times now I don’t regret it anymore… no need to cut the wheel. I’d rather spend 100$ once than Dremel 1000$ wheels multiple times…
If I returned to racing HED is one of the 2 or 3 brands I’d put on my short list for race wheels.
ENVE will be going back on my list after the massive reversal of putting “micro” hooks back into their new wheelset. I hope it trickles up to the deeper wheels and disc.
My understanding is it’s on the 100mm, but could never get confirmation
Why is everything so bloody complicated. I’ve got a current gen Speed Concept, the Trek 75mm wheels front and rear and was looking for a disk. I’m 85kg most of the year, 82kg minimum, and FMOP on the bike and race around 270W for half distance, bit north of 300w for shorter races. Surfaces are rough chipseal, so will be running 28mm tyres.
So complicated bit is that after there being nothing locally in stock for a year, then I can finally get my hands on a DT Swiss disk. But then I see that the current ‘rules’ are I shouldn’t be looking at anything less than 21mm ID (DT Swiss is 20). But then if I look at the write ups on pretty much all the wheels above then there’s comments about loose / rusting hubs (Scope) build issues (aerocoach), needing to dremel the wheel to inflate (parcours) etc etc.
It’s just doing my head in. Which is back to the ‘is the DT Swiss at 20mm ID really that bad?’ Otherwise that seems to tick the box of locally available (and so warrantied, but equiv to US$2500), good reputation for build/durability and is a disk.
Oh my goodness. Didn’t realize how much power people are putting out
270 watts in a half distance is only good enough for FMOP
What are the FOP doing 325?
What sort of average speed on a flat HIM does that get you with 275 watts?
I had the same dilemma almost pull the trigger on the DT Swiss disc, but I decided to buy the Cadent one.
I agree those numbers are pretty suspect. Even if you’re a big dude, 300w is def fop if not ffop.
Some folks have badly calibrated power meters for sure though, i recall several posters saying that their 300w for only got them barely above mop in local races - no way that is actual reality with a good power meter.
They’re racing their Pelotons in a virtual triathlon.
I had top 20 AG bike splits averaging 240W for a 70.3 back in my M40-44 days. At 270 I would’ve been probably top 5. W/KG was around 3.5 at 240W.
Shite, did not mean to derail this. The point I was trying, and failed to spot the way it alternatively read, was about the stiffness/lack of being a factor. Why I put the weight in there too. I’m 1.92/6’4". As for the power, I’m comfortable in that being accurate noting that was off a quarq spider, I have 2 other quarqs bikes that match closely with both tacx neos when they are on there.
That said, it was also on my old bike that wasn’t especially aero, and not only am I tall, I’m all legs that means I sit higher and so am not the most slippery. Finally, when I said FMOP I guess I was referring to overall - ie I’m interested in the minutes, not the (mili-seconds). Last TT bike I had for over a decade, so I’m not chasing every last 0.1w in the latest tech. Also, ranked my performance is BMOP out the water, Move through the field on the bike, drop a few places on the run to finish FMOP if things go well. Well within the top 10% on the bike, yep, but I compete in triathlons, hence the FMOP comment related to that context.
So back, to wheel suggestions
I guess how aero and how big you are does play a significant factor. I’m 5’7" and at 270w I am seeing around 28-30mph over the flats but I also know that there are a lot of people that push higher numbers than I am sitting in my draft.
Given your power and speed, I’d lean toward a lighter, stiff disc like the Scribe or Scope over the heavier, ultra-wide options.
So, I received the Parcours one last week, biked 150+110+60k on it already, its great, not that wide, and with the Silca Hiro no worries to inflate it. Awesome sound, nothing particular to say - its a disc wheel, fits large tires, I’m happy with it so far.
What about the HED Vanquish Pro?
1135g, Internal 22.5 / External 32mm
And if you opt for the grey decals, it pairs very nicely with the RSL 75!
Nice setup! I contacted HED a couple of times, but they were unfriendly and unprofessional, so I decided not to deal with them at all. It’s out of the question. The wheel also seems heavy at 1100g.
