My week had been going perfectly, including the arrival f my Hed Jet 6/9 C2 clinchers at my LBS. I picked them, a pair of Conti Attack/Force tires, and a 4-pack of tubes up, headed home, and started assembly. The rear wheel went together without a hitch…until I started working on the front wheel: POW! Tube in the rear wheel blows. I finish the front, set it aside and start working on replacing the tube from the rear wheel. POW! Front wheel blows.
WTF?
This is my first experience with deep-dish clinchers, and I presumed there was nothing special involved. Was I wrong? Anyone else have similar experiences?

They’re wider rims and the spoke holes span a wider path around the rim. You can’t use standard road rim tape. Use mtb rim tape or, better yet, veloplugs.
.
Bob, you find a source for the larger diameter plugs? I’ve used them on some other wheels and like ‘em, but the holes in my new C2 are too big so I just used a fat strip of good ol’ Velox which has worked fine other than the extra thickness exacerbating the tightness of the tire/rim bead intial install. Would like to replace w/ something thinner/lighter at the next convenient opportunity, however. Tried googling but couldn’t find anything domestically.
My understanding is that you don’t need to use rim tape on these. Some talc powder to avoid the tube from folding on itself or sticking to the rim and you’re good to go.
have you used veloplugs successfully with latex inner tubes? i’ve heard a lot of anecdotal evidence that the latex is too elastic and works its way under the edge of the plugs and pinches flat, and some people say veloplugs can only work with butyl tubes.
I just had some Jet 6s and 9s arrive, all C2s. One with a Powertap, which I was anxious to try. I put together without rim tape, which I didn’t have on hand and blew out the first tube I installed. Next day I went to my LBS and installed rim tape and all has been perfect.

I’ve tried both the yellow and red veloplugs on my Jet 60 C2 and Jet disk. The holes are just the wrong size for either veloplug.
I also had early problems with narrow rim tape exposing the edge of the spoke hole and pinching the tube. I ended up using wider Velox cloth tape and have had no further problems. But, the wide velox tape is heavy and highly air permeable. So, I’ve noticed that the tire loses air more quickly with latex tubes and velox than with other less permeable tapes.
any chance you found wider (22mm) non-cloth rim tape?
I tried the Vittoria wide rim “band”. It’s one piece, not an adhesive tape, and I think it’s made of nylon. Anyway, it was wide enough, but would not stay centered over the holes. It would crease, fold, and squirm around every time I changed a tire.
So, I’m still using the cloth tape and looking for better solutions. I might drill out the spoke holes slightly to take the bigger veloplugs, but I hate to take a drill to my $$$ wheels. I also considered gluing in the smaller veloplugs, but that seemed kind of kludgey.

try veloplugs and rox rim tape- i have had good success with several HED wheels with this method. However- my JET 60- does not seem to like it for some reason… so i switched to velox type rim tape

Do you mean tape over the velolugs? Isn’t that kind of redundant redundant?
