Yeah, but his wife was only 64 i think.
Found this in an article.
Arakawa’s body was found near a space heater in the bathroom with prescription pills scattered on a countertop nearby, the Associated Press reported.
You left out the 2 other dogs were alive on the property.
The article also noted the local gas utility provider was assisting in the investigation.
More info here.
Maybe in bad taste but speculating:
- Hackman is in the mudroom - presumably coming in or out of the house / being active. He collapses and dies of something natural - heart attack or aneurism.
- Wife hears him fall and or discovers him later and, distraught, swallows a bunch of pills and collapses in the bathroom.
- Unlucky dog eats some of the scattered pills.
That was what I was thinking about the dog when I read about the scattered pills. Poor thing.
100% my thoughts.
I read the dead dog was found in the closet. The other dogs, alive, were in the yard.
Wondering if there’s any significance to a dog being in the closet?
If the dog ate a bunch of pills and presumably felt sick it was likely a comfort spot. One of my dogs prefers to lay down in my closet when she’s scared or not feeling well.
It seems rather sad that the wife is dead as well. At 64 that she felt she had nothing less to live for. That would be presuming it was a suicide pact. If she was killed that’s very sad also
Crazy that they were apparently dead for 10 days before being found. Suggests to me a pretty isolated existence.
Agree also. I could see her being distraught but at 95 you had to know he was going one of these days so it couldn’t have been a complete surprise. I could see if she had been in her mid to late 80’s. He abruptly dies, you’re late 80’s figure you’ve led a long life and probably only have a few years left yourself, don’t want to be without him and you take the pills. But mid 60’s, she probably still had another 20 years left.
Which means the caretaker skipped a week of checking the property.
The story I read said thyroid and blood pressure pills were found. Not exactly, drugs you think of to OD on. Of course the story wasn’t really clear if those were the pills that were found strewn about or other pills.
I think the dog was in a crate. Which means it died badly.
Reports also indicate that the wife’s hands and feet had begun mummification, likely due to the space heater being on in the room and her having been dead for several days. I think I saw that Hackman had implanted medical devices that last registered activity on something like 17Feb.
So they were likely dead for more than a week before they were found.
Story I read said 10 days.
The actor Gene Hackman died from heart disease at his home in New Mexico about a week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died from the effects of hantavirus, which causes a respiratory illness and is associated with rodent droppings, the authorities said on Friday.
Alzheimer’s disease was a contributing factor to Mr. Hackman’s death, Dr. Heather Jarrell, New Mexico’s chief medical examiner, said at a news conference announcing the causes of death.
They were not discovered until nine days after Mr. Hackman’s pacemaker indicated that he had died.
The poor guy roamed around the house for a week probably not knowing what to do or what was going on. How sad.
