Freehub doesn’t spin as freely when thru axle is fully tightened

Installed a new rear wheel. When I fully tighten the thru axle it doesn’t spin as well. When I loosen up the thru axle it spins like a champ. There’s plenty of clearance between the hub axle and frame so there’s no rub there and there’s no brake rub.

Hed Vanquish with XDR driver, SRAM AXS 12s cassette, all installed correctly.

Is there missing spacer or something?

I had that problem once. Is there a small “sleeve” piece that’s about 3/4 - 1 inch long that fits inside the hub. For me it Turns out that I didn’t insert this “sleeve” into the hub. This sleeve prevents the bearings from getting compressed when the axle is tightened. Sorry for the lack of descriptive terms.

This is correct! There is also frequently another much shorter sleeve that fits between the inboard freehub bearing and the drive side wheel bearing, both sleeves limit bearing preload. If the bearings were recently replaced is there a chance one was not seated all the way?

It’s a brand new wheel right out of the box.

I would think it could be the 2nd space (item 4 from the right)? note it says optional. May be it comes as a spare with the wheel? it could be either of these 2 spacers not being properly installed at the factory?

I had a new wheel also. That spacer was included in my box but I didn’t know what it was for. Went for a fit and the guy fixed it for me.

I took apart the hub and the spacer sleeve is there. I I tried a 1.8 and 2.8 mm spacer like shown above but neither helped. It might just need to loosen up for lack of a better term.

I’d contact HED, they have good support in my experience. I don’t think it will simply work in.

this may sound like a dumb or insulting question, but here goes… what torque did you use to tighten the through axle? Most through axles have a torque range/ number on them. It might just be torqued too tight?

If you are using an 11 or 12 speed cassette, the 1.8mm and 2.8mm spacers can’t be used.

Hed thinks that spacer sleeve might be out of spec by a mm or so which they think is compressing the bearing. So they’re sending me a new driver.

Why wouldn’t they send you a spacer sleeve?

I think they want to be sure the whole driver is within spec.

Are they sending you a spacer sleeve?

Should be included with the new driver they sent.

Hi, did you fixed this problem ? I have quite the same on my bike that also have xdr freehub.

Give up with all your spacer chat - as mentioned - it’s SRAM Axs with a XDR Freehub - it’s not a Shimano Freehub.

Is the lockring/outer face of the XD cassette rubbing on the frame droupout when the thru axle is tight?

Pat.

Different Hed wheel. I’m working with Hed on this but the rear wheels spin perfectly fine when not mounted to my bike. Mount them on the bike and I get this. Plenty of space on each side of the rear axle and there is no disc brake rub or anything touching the frame. Something about my bike and Hed wheels isn’t working. I’m at a loss. :man_shrugging:t3:

Any suggestions?

This is usually a result of this washer not making it’s way back inside the hub at some point -

Washer is where it needs to be. This was one of Hed’s troubleshooting ideas.
