I am happy I get to see these rules couple of months before aerotesting different systems. But man. People are going to be upset at bike check ins!
How do you feel about it? Does it all make sense or is DTU a bit to UCI in fighting expertise marginal gains?
It is getting a bit like formula 1 in terms of technical arms race and so things have to swing the other way from time to time and simplify the sport (while keeping things safe). There are plenty of ways to safely carry hydration that does not get into the crossover of adding fairing effects to the bike/rider complex. Realistically it would be best if they just mandated circular bottles on downtube and seat tube only and call it done and it is the same competition rules for all and we can all be a touch slower that disadvantages no one other than a factional percentage of more TSS/kilojoules on the bike entering T2 for the run. In theory it makes the run slightly harder for all, but the run has been getting progressively easier for all due to bike tech advancements in the last 10 years, so why not make the bike a bit tougher again
These rules are ridiculous…
i do see the need for changing rules for safety reasons, but with those fins at the rear, or the toolbox limit for 1 liter, i cannot use my bike in Germany anymore…i have a setup i am used to and also cannot buy anything which complies…i also do not understand some of the rules (the rules of the height of the bottle holder)
it seems, the germans will forbid the use of tt bikes next year! as they have aerodynamical advanteges…most of the products are safe and only decrease resistance slightly…i do not see the point not having “Sails” in the rear…it is a typical german behaviour…if you have some smartasses with power and a task…they will definetaly use it…
a friend of mine was forbidden to use a bta because it was 5 mm too high (last year) no rule enable the german judge to do that, but he had to take it off…which ended in a race without fron hydration! He than asked “roth officials” about the bta and wanted to have a clear statement if he can use it…roth answered, we do not know?
He ended up, mounting the thing on his bike on raceday, after checking-in…Germany is great
I’m not eager to dive deep into 7 pages German specification, but I also don’t trust the above infographic. I’ll wait for a more customer-friendly announcement
The German rules update covers the recent changes in World Triathlon & IM rules, e.g. regarding the 2l + 2l volume etc.
But then it goes above & beyond to complicate our lives: BTA bottle must be close to arms and cannot extend beyond the head tube axle, BTS bottle holders cannot create additional surface beyond what’s required for the bottle itself in the dimension of bottle length (I see no limitations on the width / distance between the bottle and e.g. seat post), no hydration allowed on top tube.
I wonder about the disastrous implications for Ku Cycle…
The reactions on this thread is proof that Faris has taken over DTU rule writing and everyone needs to ride like this on the way to winning Kona (OK this is not his 2005 winning ride, but close enough). Note the bottle in his hand is about to go into the crack in his speedo lol
