Disc wheel as everyday wheel?

OK, I feel stupid even asking…
But does anyone has experience of riding a rear disc wheel as a “everyday” training?
And is it recommended?

You should.

I strongly don’t reccomend it.lol way stupid question
.

I have seen it done on Key Biscayne in Miami where people like to show off their gear and it just looks ridiculous. Not to mention that fact that discs are in no way built to handle the miles that one should be training if they really get any advantage out a disc anyways. A Hed tri-spoke would be a much better alternative

South Florida is the Mecca for tri geeks who sport their $5000 wheelset on a daily basis
.

besides projecting an image you may not want, you would be wearing out a thousand dollar disc wheel, and they are a pain to inflate day to day or if you get a flat.

The wheel should be OK from a durability standpoint, and from a bike handling standpoint.

The main reasons not to use it are:

Replacement cost (if you crash or hit a pothole), and it’s not easily repairable.

Harsh ride (unless it’s a spoked wheel with a “disc” cover…like the HED Jet).

Aesthetics (you see all the negative “poser” comments people are leaving).

By making it a race only wheel you can use faster tires and latex tubes.

If you must use a disk…

I would but to really get used to it i would ride along side a hwy on a windy day, dont forget to get a disc cover for your front wheel… so whe race day comes you will be able to deal with gale force winds without a prob!

It’s fine. Make sure you use a rear and a front disc though.

If you got it, use it. Don’t worry about what the peanut gallery thinks. Tim

its not about the peanut gallery, its about common sense and not wasting $$$. which reminds me, i saw a hipster riding his fixie with a zipp disc in the back and his hipster gf riding on 303s yesterday. a little bit of me died inside.

That’s where I draw the line. I’ve got no problem putting some good miles on race wheels, because frankly, they’re a waste if you don’t. But that is too far…

Anybody missing some Zipps?

It’s only been a few years since all the responders here would have scoffed at getting sand on a 404, but yesterday, in my small pond, a third of the 45+ field was racing cyclocross on them. Do what you want, heck, go race CX on it, you’ll probably be at the leading edge!

That would be fun, especially on a windy day.

You are the peanut gallery. Tim

Hipster probably paid <$50 for the frame/components, or traded a 6 pack of PBR for it, but prolly paid full price for the Zipps.

Silly me thought you couldn’t put a price on irony…

Perhaps not an ‘every day’ wheel. But there’s nothing wrong with going out a couple times a month with your disc wheel and aero helmet for your long ride. It’s best to get the feel and be familiar with that set up long before your “A” race. In fact, it is a good idea.

But if a rear disc is your only rear wheel at the present time, by all means: use it every single day.
