Disc wheel as everyday wheel?

it would make a lot more sense to run a deep aero front wheel and a shallow rear- youve got to improve the handling skills.

Might as well put some cross tires on it and commute with it. Am I right?

Fight like you train Bro. If the only rear wheel I had was my Zipp disc I’d use it every day. Even on my road bike and I wouldn’t give a shit what anyone says.

This whole thing about discs being only for racing is bullshit. If one’s only or rare experience in riding with a disc wheel is on race day, that person might be sorry if the weather/winds are not as forecast (which happens from time to time)

This means more than saving the disc for a race rehersal lt means using it much more frequently…and there are more than a few reasons why it is a good idea.

Ride it if you want. How do people know why others are riding a disk or anything else. Maybe they are sick and will not be riding again and someone assumes they know you!!! Those people will find something to judge if you leave the disk home! just live life and have fun , if it isn’t hurting someone go for it. A disk makes you happy, ride it. Here we ride what we want and no one cares. The people that said be worried about what others think…“damn”

A disk makes you happy, ride it.

Disc wheels are very happy to be ridden as they happen to be the loneliest of all wheels. The disc wheel says “why do I get no love? Why am I in this dark closet 360 days per year?”

Therefore, not riding ones disc wheel regularly is a serious form of emotional abuse to the wheel.

anyone ride “everyday” with their aero helmet?

If I wanted to I would : ) If someone else did I could care less.

Agreed. Way too many snobs talking smack!

I specifically bought a short-tail aero helmet for the winter, nice little thing actually, made by Ked. Makes an appreciable difference compared to a standard road vented helmet.

The disc cover stays on my TT bike rear wheel all the time, but then again it´s a Mavic CXP30 underneath that would probably withstand a nuclear attack. If people think I´m an ejit for riding a ´disc wheel´ well they´ve got it wrong.

I couldn´t care less what anyone thinks.

The Selector is a warm helmet that’s great for cold-weather cycling. Some snowboard helmets can be worn biking. The Selector is probably too fragile to stand up to repeated snowboard wear.

I am amazed what a TROLL can do in the first post.

Must be chuckling non-stop right now seeing all (including mine) these responses.

Welcome to ST Fennie Yuen! Finished any good movies lately?

If the only rear wheel I had was a zipp disc… I would buy another wheel.

Pretty tough to true a disc wheel.

Like others, I have a Wheelbuilder cover on a Powertap wheel as a training wheel that is used on the trainer and the road everyday, as well as a standard Zipp disc for racing. I like this combination and it is not very costly either.

Wheelbuilder cover and it never comes off. Mainly because I’m lazy and don’t want to consistently take it on and off. The bike snobs can kiss my ass or buy me a different wheel.

Depending on what wheels are on my road bike I ride the disc on the tri bike. If riding a different set of wheels makes you want to go ride then do it. Sometimes I change up the wheels just to have a change.

+2 Ride it!! If it makes you ride and have fun…ride it! Period.

All these people here that say ride it only on race day because…are all BS.

  1. You’ll break it or wear it out…Really? When was the last time you broke or wore out a wheel…how about a disc wheel? We ride $6,000 worth of parts and frames every single day and you don’t wear them out…but for heavens sake, save that one wheel!!! Really? Ride the damn thing, it ain’t gonna break, it ain’t gonna wear out.

2.Save the tire for race day…change the friggin’ tire before race day, it only takes 10 minutes.

  1. You’ll look like a “tool”…Really? As if we don’t all ready, everytime we put on spandex and ride a stupid looking bike? People think we are tools already, the disc ain’t changing that.

  2. Don’t do anything on race day you don’t do in training…Really?..except use something on race day that will change the way your bike handles in ALL conditions that you never use. Brilliant!!! That disc will change the way your bike corners, handles in ANY wind at all, changes the ride of the bike…but, for heavens sake don’t use it in training!!

I’m old enough that I don’t care what you think I look like…trust me…I don’t care!! I’ll ride what makes me happy and have the most fun. I ride my disc each weekend for my brick to simulate race conditions. I KNOW what my bike will and will not do with a disc and 101 front in all conditions. I know what my bike with disc/101 will do at 45mph, in the aero position in windy conditions downhill and around a corner…Do you? I’m guessing I just made up enough time on you that any difference in tunnel testing of frames just got blown out of the water and will not make a difference anymore.

OK…rant over!!! : )

this year at the hammerfest stage race.

before that was a year prior while training.

dunno about longevity of the non spoke discs, eventually you are going to crash in training or have a rock shot sideways into it that may damage it. or run over something that may damage it.

really

never noticed that handling change you speak of.

I have seen it done on Key Biscayne in Miami where people like to show off their gear and it just looks ridiculous. Not to mention that fact that discs are in no way built to handle the miles that one should be training if they really get any advantage out a disc anyways. A Hed tri-spoke would be a much better alternative

I’ve seen those people once in a while (rarely) also on Key Biscayne. I’d like to think they are just testing the disc, tire, cassette, etc. and not just doing a training ride.

No offense, but you must not ride very much.

I rode my disc wheel for two months in a row when my other wheels and bike were shipped back to the Netherlands. It is really uncomfortable and I would not recommend it. You feel every bump in the rode and lots of people in the street turn there head when you ride on cobblestones. (it’s noisy) I was so happy to ride my regular wheels again. A disc is for race day and the ride before raceday to check if everything works.
